I went to the local scrap yard to recycle some steel left over form my last couple of jobs. after I backed up an started to unload my steel when I notice that there is a bunch of heavy equipment parts in the pile.I looked close and seen the side of a vise( might I ad almost my dream vise) laying there I had to make a moral choice really quick so I reasoned with my self if I don't re weigh my load after and I just give them my scrap for this vise it will be like a wash so I took it and hurried home not even looking over the whole vise. When I got home I was pleasantly surprised at the condition it was in!. The only thing that was missing was the Handel! So I machined one an welded it together!

Kinda ironic here in a funny way...saving a vise (which squeezes and crushes things) from a bigger machine that squeezes and crushes things!

I may get flamed for this, but you just admitted to petty theft on a web forum. The vise was the property of the scrap yard. Because you left something of similar value (your scrap) does not diminish the fact that you stole the vise. It would be very similar to a person pulling up after hours to a hardware store and loading a few bags of soil or mulch then sliding an envelope of money under the door. In order for it to be a legal transaction, both parties must be aware that it is occurring. If your method were legal, I could "buy" anything I wanted from anyone simply by taking it and then sending them a check for the fair market value of it.

I can not say I wouldn't be tempted to do the same thing. But I don't think I would admit on the internet that I did it. Too many snitches. Nice vise. Couldn't you have spoken with the yard personnel and made a purchase?

Very cool, I've always believed there's a moral imperative to save useful things from being thrown away or destroyed!

Personally, I probably would have just asked whoever was there if I could keep the vise, and just subtract its value from whatever I was dropping off...but I don't think it makes much difference one way or the other.

Also, you repaired something by machining something AND welding it. In my world, that makes you a good person!

C'mon guys, don't get started with arguing. I hate to see another cool thread ruined and locked down.

If you don't like this thread, go on to another. This is a forum to talk about tools, not a place to make moral judgments or accusations.

Just enjoy the tools, or find another thread, and enjoy the tools on that one.

Nice find !!! and its not really stealing. as long as you left more than that weighs. They don't care about what you take at most yards..unless you weigh more coming out than you did going it. then I'd assume they would just have you pay scrap price for the difference.

Almost every yard I have been to here does not sell anything from the yard. They cite liability concerns which makes sense to me. I do know that other yards I have heard of that do sell contents usually sell for more than the cost of the scrap. As this was done incognito I assume one of those was the policy.

Perhaps I also read the post incorrectly but I understood it to say he unloaded his scrap and tossed the vise in the back of the truck. By doing so (and assuming he stopped to get paid) he only left extra scrap in the exact amount of weight as the vise; no extra.

What is with the spiderman guy? ^

Anywhoo...Congrats on the find and saving a potentially doomed Vise. If it was in the Scrap Yard it was pretty much destined for scrap. Nice save OP and great find. Take care of her and don't listen to all of the petty theft ****. Once it is in the Scrap Yard it is worth the cost of scrap. You paid for it by having it in your truck on the way out. Hence not getting your payment for your scrap you dropped off.

There are a million ways to skin a cat but whining about somebody else's good fortune is not going to get any skinnin' done.

I agree... if someone decided to THROW AWAY a perfectly good tool, then finders-keepers. Good for you! Saved another vise from being melted down.
And he was dropping off scrap metal anyway... I have a gentlemens agreement with my scrapper, if I see something I like, then we do some sort of deal.

Reminds me of the time when I took scrap to the yard and wished I had grabbed a few of the fire plugs that were there.

I went to the local scrap yard.....

You are just a giant piece of ****!

I have no moral problem with you picking up the vise. I think I would have a problem with you leaving it there. That would be a waste and a shame. My local scrap yard is pretty cool about such things. They even sell some stuff. Good find.

How are ya gonna sleep at night knowing you stole that vise out of a dump? How do you expect the dump to recover from such a catastrophic financial loss? Tell you what. Ship it to me, mail 12 cents to the dump, say 5 hail marys, and all will be forgiven.
