Go for the milwalkee with the quick lock cord and invest in the 25 foot replacement cord, best money I ever spent of course I have the 1/2 inch hole shooter and the circ saw with the quick lock as well. So nice not to have a extension cord when using any of them.
As a point of refrance I also have a corded Porter Cable tiger saw and cordless Rigid and Bosch recip saws, I still reach for my 20+ year old Sawzall most often.

I have a Craftsman and it works great! And use lennox blades.

Good tip, I see they make a 2 and 3 wire cord but do you know if the plug ever changed or are they all the same?

Get a Milwaukee & yes, they are variable speed.
(by the way... the dewalt one *****, IMO)
I have the bigger of the two DeWalt corded recip. saws, with variable speed, and it has been very reliable and has been used for everything from underground work (pipes, tree roots, etc) to demolition (studs, drywall, nails, etc) to tree pruning.
Once you buy one and start using it, you will find many situations where it is the "right" tool.
One of the best tools out there, I may not use mine all the time but when I use it, it's hands down well worth the money.
I started out with a PC Tiger saw and used it a lot. Since I bought a DeWalt 18V kit, I rarely use the PC one unless it's going to be a bunch of cuts.
As far as which brand is best, I don't know but I will say this, I'd rather use a HF saw than hack saw.

As far as I know it's the same cord and fitting. all mine came with the 3 wire grounded cord.
