I had no idea this would create such a heated discussion. We purchased a SawStop because in our 30yrs in the woodworking business we have seen our fair share of lost or mangled fingers. Not a lot fortunately, but our fair share. Up until about two years ago all our saws were unguarded with at best just a writhing knife. Our Worksafe B.C. cracked down on us to have all our saws guarded, so wanting to do all we could to comply and create a safer environment for our employees we bought the SS to replace our main tablesaw. To us the cost was justified. Ask anyone who has lost a digit to a saw and they would all agree that they would pay practically anything to have it back. How do you put a price on a finger or hand.

I have to admit that I don't particularly like having guards in place, I find they get in the way and I personally like to see the blade. Many of the proceedures we do on this saw require the guard to be removed so the added safety is great. As has already been stated they are a well built saw and have a nice quick release feature for removing the guard and writhing blade when we need to.
There's also no excuse to put it back on ASAP.

It took a fair bit of wiggling to get the blade out of the brake and I fully expected to have to replace the blade. The blade looked fine so I put it back on the saw and checked it with a dial gauge and it was within .002 of an inch run-out. Cost was about $85.00 to replace the cartridge.

For those wondering about the car it's a '68 Beaumont SD396. Basically the Canadian version of a Malibu SS396. They were sold through Pontiac, Buick, GMC dealers in Canada only. Although never being advertised or sold as a Pontiac they do share some of the Pontiac styling like the split grille and V-shaped emblems. The dashboard is the same as a Tempest/Lemans/GTO.
It is a 350hp 396 with a turbo 400 trans. One of 702 produced that year.

Bob.
