Saylor Beall 705 or a clone

I'm looking at a pump that's not too far away from me but I'm already assuming it's a 705 clone. What are your opinions? Do all the authentic pumps have Saylor Beall made in the usa cast into the side of the crankcase? I had heard the earlier ones didn't have it and they only started that when the clones came out. This one already looks so tired, could a clone look this aged already from being outside. I wish you could tell them apart easier. Any tips on what to look for on the outside from pictures? I have seen a newer 705 clone and that was stamped Made in China. And I know if it's an Eaton their name is cast into it. Thanks guys!

I asked the seller if the flywheel spins true and he told me it didn't. I still may be interested given the price if it's in fact an original but I do already have two Quincy 325's and a Curtis E-50 and a Champion R30 Damn, I think I'd still get it! Just call me a pump collector :)

No they are not marked well but if you have the serial number off the plate you can call them and they will tell you what it is

I know it's a 705 or a cloned version. Supposedly there is no metal identification tag on it. I've heard that a billion times and I tell them where to chip away at the dried up crusty dirty oil and bam there it is. He's adamant there isn't one though.

When I was seriously hunting a 707, one thing I noticed was the hardware. Everyone that was a clone had metric bolts in the head.

That is not to say all clones are metric though.

that's a clone version bc of the aftercooler (@ exit, not between LP and HP). I have a clone version too and they're built very well.

as for "made in usa" casting, I never seen one w/ it. I went to an authorized dealer years ago and I didn't see on the US made units (they had 5-6 units). This was my argument about Saylor-Beal not made in USA 100.000% any more. I don't think their major components are made in USA anymore but I would prefer the US made more. The parts are not interchangeable b/t the two, one is metric and the other is standard(US).

You have me confused but I know you're making some good points. I'm still trying to decode your "b/t". And you're talking about the intercooler between the lp discharge and hp intake or the aftercooler that comes off the hp discharge that looks funny on that pump?

see my edit. yes the "funny" thing coming off of the outlet (HP) into the tank/receiver.

That pump is missing the centrifugal valve.

I'm not calling the aftercooler "the funny thing " I know what it is. I'm asking what's so funny or wonky about it that clues you in on it not being an authentic SB? The aftercooler should attach to the discharge outlet of the HP piston. I'm not following the part where you say it should be between the two pistons???

the US made does not have the aftercooler. forget everything else I said.

if you open the head up, US made disc valves are different. It has three large holes that are properly milled out instead of 10-or-so small holes that are drilled. otherwise, you can not tell by visual inspection.

Great thanks that makes a lot more sense lol. If it doesn't have an aftercooler I'll ask them to look and see if it has 4122 cast into the top of the head (LP discharge outlet???)uploadfromtaptalk1442331150010.jpg if that checks out I'm sure the the bottom of the valves will have the clown face

Honestly, I wouldn't even mess with Saylor Beal pumps, go find a Champion R15B. A lot of guys on here put SB at the top (for non-pressure lube pump) but Champion R15B is better because it weighs like 100lbs less than SB 705.

I have a clone 705 that I want to rebuild but the biggest thing that holds me back is how the hell am I gonna lift the pump up to the 60gal upright tank. The specs are similar between the two.

Parts for R15B are more available to purchase than SB.

I agree with you 100% on the 5hp Gardner Denvers I have an R30 right now that's getting a 7.5 horse single phase and I'd like to pick up R15's for my pump collection but they don't pop up in my area covered in grease minus the tank and motor. I only find them tank mounted with a good motor and they are always making air which raises the price to where I can do with out it.

I know you have tried to make this point before. You were 100.00% wrong then and continue to be 100.00% wrong now. I have had a tour of the factory, you are wrong. We get it, you don't like SB.

This is my SB 705 made in 1998. It's got a radiator style after-cooler.

That's an intercooler (cools between the 2 stages or between the lp discharge and hp intake). The previous posts were mentioning the aftercooler that comes off the hp discharge port and it's seen on the clones but not on the original Saylor Beall 705's

See that blue sheet metal box in the background? That's got the after-cooler in it.
So yeah, it's not built on. It's a large separate unit.

I can't tell what that is from the picture but if you say it is you must know so. That's not something that is fixed to the bare pump however and that's what has been pointed out that is a tell tell sign it's not an original.

This is the Saylor Beall factory original after-cooler setup. Can't say whether there were any other configurations over the years.

No bolted on HP outlet flange. Outlet flange is integral to the head casting.

Correct o mundo! I think in the future I'll call it good (a clone) if I see an aftercooler bolted up and stop right there. Easy enough for me since it sticks out like a sore thumb :)

I'm a little late to this thread, but in my experience, the clone pumps have metric hardware. SB pumps have fractional hardware. My SB705 US made pump has tapped holes on the discharge port for the cast iron aftercooler.

I have the same question... I thought mine was a clone as there was no name cast in it, but I finally got around to starting to dissasemble it for the rebuild. Found SAE hardware, not metric. No aftercooler, valves are machined with 3 slots not just a pile of drill holes. WA 40484 cast in the crank case & 4122 cast in the head. It looks original to the tank (not that it means much) which has 1974 on the tag.

Yes, you have a genuine SB. There is no question about that for me. I'm still waiting to add a 707 to my collection. I'll likely go new though and pick me up a Eaton bare pump and spin it with a 7.5hp Baldor for my home shop compressor when I get my ducks in row. For now I'll just scoop up all the old Quincy's on CL for the time being. I have 5 at the moment and one 3 cylinder Curtis Toldeo.
