I'm rebuilding a couple Saylor Beall 705's and had a few questions. I'm new to media blasting. Was going to buy a cheap harbor freight blast cabinet but not sure what type of media to use and at what pressure. I want to strip all the paint off the pump assembly and I'm also considering blasting pistons and such or maybe a soak on those parts? What do you guys recommend? I appreciate the help.

Blasting aluminum pistons is a great way to ruin them. The glass beads or sand imbeds in the aluminum. No promises on soda or walnut shells or ground plastic. For me, it's solvent, or replace.

Cast iron might be a different story. I haven't seen a cast-iron piston since forever.

Ya that's what I've been reading. I figured I would blast the paint off the exterior of the pump parts and soak/ brush the internal parts. Heard all kinds of different things about what to soak everything in.

Here's the first pump I started with. Needed new cylinder, LP piston, Connecting rod, etc.

Went looking for parts and found a few more pumps. These new ones seem really good. I got one all torn down and couldn't find anything wrong with it. I'm still going to be replacing all bearings (bearing inserts, taper bearings & races, and needle bearings), all gaskets, crank seal, piston rings, and all new valve assemblies.

Those pumps are a beast!! Do you use a crane to move the pump around?

I suggest that if the parts are in good order, reuse it. There's no reason to spend a bunch of money when you don't need it.

Ya, I'm not real interested in just making it run. I'd like to restore it to "new" condition and never have to open it up again.

Gonna give it another week for paint to finish curing, then I’ll put it back together.
