Saylor Beall 705 vertical rebuild

I bought this compressor for $150.00 about 6 month ago and have been working on the weekends on it when I can. I've been doing as much research on it as possible and talking with people at saylor beall. I have replaced the motor with a single phase 5hp lesson, all new wiring, pressure switch, plugs, paint, and stickers. In all I have $650.00 in it but I can't get the lines right that go from the pump to the tank. If someone has an idea I'm open to opinions. It's running and is remarkable quiet for the size.

Looks like the discharge line is right. Is there a check valve at the end of the discharge pipe where it enters the tank? There should be. Then the tube fitting on the end of your crankcase should be connected to the small port on your check valve. Inside the crankcase is a valve that is opened when the crankshaft stops turning. Thus bleeding the air in the discharge pipe when it stops pumping. This insures the compressor is unloaded the next time it starts. The check valve keeps the air in the tank from bleeding out of this valve.

Looks like you've done a great job. That compressor is beautiful. The discharge line going to the tank looks good to me, but as Fixnair stated, do you have a check valve installed? Also, how are you unloading the discharge line between the tank and compressor head?

Did SB give you a manufacture date for your setup? Based on the centrifugal unloader housing, it is old. Again, great job reviving an older machine.

Yes fixnair I ran a 1/4" copper line for the unloader I just hadn't put it on when I took this pic. Today I ran it up to full air pressure of 175psi for a test run and found some issues. The stainless braided line that I used could not hold up. The coupling on the pump side failed, and the 2- 2" plugs that are in the front have leaks around them. I will be addressing those issues next weekend. Any suggestions for a good replacement for the braided line would be good. Thanks

Sweet restoration. I would put a 90 Parker elbow on the side so that you don't have a long protrusion on the side that could can whacked.

You could use a hydraulic hose, or copper pipe...

If you add some extra length in the copper pipe (i.e. a few loops) between the pump and the tank it will help to cool the air down some.

Your signature does not say where you are. It would be helpful to others to know which city you're in. We might be able to steer you to the appropriate place. Call an air compressor house and ask them where you could purchase a flex line. I would suggest 3/4" male pipe on one end and 3/4" flare on the other end with the appropriate adapter. Also, the Teflon flex hoses are OK but the best would be a SS bellows with a braided jacket. The Teflon doesn't like to bend very sharp. It will kink on you.

A yea…pretty simple, just get the proper aftercooler/discharge tube from Saylor-Beall

I am so jealous of your air compressor. It is set up so well! I bought a house that had one of these very setups in it. Im still trying to get everything figured out on it to get it set up correctly. I need to get a new aftercooler tube and check valve as well. Heres some before and after pics of the work I have done so far... keep up the good work man!
