Saylor-Beall 737-80

I wanted to post my new compressor and keep a log of the various videos that I make about it.

I found Saylor-Beall through the usual google searches, "best air compressor" etc. It was down to Quincy and S-B. I called the local Quincy dealer and they did not return my call. On the Saylor-Beall facebook site I asked if they had any local dealers and I was given a company in Terrebonne which is about 40 minutes from me.

I was set on getting a horizontal model to keep a low center of gravity, and I was looking at the 735-80 originally. But as I asked for all the options to be added, I ended up deciding that I wanted to have 5HP, but with the 707 pump. So the 737-80 was my choice. As options were added, I got Pressure lube, Aftercooler, and on and on.

My order went in on March 8th, and due to receiver shortages, I only took delivery on July 12th. I picked it up with my little 4x8 trailer and made it back home easily. Unrolling the compressor from my trailer was an adventure, but it eventually made it into place.

Meh, for 95% of home based shops that compressor is waay overkill, that's at least what I keep telling myself.

S-B sent me an electronically operated auto drain (for no known reason), but I found it to be annoying in that there wasn't really an optimal way to wire it up so that it didn't turn on all day and night, but still sufficiently purged the tank while the compressor was running. I requested a pneumatic auto-drain assembly like you depict above, and I find that it purges the vast majority of the liquid that accumulates in the tank. From time to time I'll let some air out of the tank so the compressor cycles (thus cycling the pneumatic valve twice) and it seldom spits more than a a drop or two of water. I'm not sure additional concern is warranted.

If you really want manual purge capability, just remove the petcock from the end and plumb in a length of pipe with a ball valve at the end that you can reach from the side of the compressor.

Thanks. i was attempting to remove the petcock, unsuccessfully as you can see on the paint. I have one of those pull cable operated drains but couldn’t get the end off.

I’ll try the Bekomat and keep the pneumatic in case I change my mind. Not sure that I will though.

Bekomat arrived today. I got it installed using some of the parts from the original pneumatic drain.

You can't beat the Bekomat, I installed the larger model on our shop compressor and it's worked flawlessly for the past 15 years. You're lucky that you have quite a bit of clearance to install it.

When I was hooking it up I realized why my pressure switch is spitting water all the time. The fitting on the end of the compressor is at the low point, so water pools there and gets sucked in the unloader. The other side of it was the pressure to pop the pneumatic valve that was there before. So water was trapped in that short 1/4 DOT plastic line.

This would have been eliminated if the fitting had been rotated to be at the top of the aftercooler to tank connection.

Have you tried to tighten the check valve another half turn?

I'm guessing here, but I assume that the oil pump replaces the centrifugal unloader, hence the pressure switch unloading.

Last, but not least, you need to add a pair of inlet silencers as they make a world of difference in cutting down valve noise.

I have the Quiet intake filters stock, are you referring to something like the Solberg's?

If you're referring to the SLCR series silencer, then yes. You can then connect your current hooded filter housing into the SLCR units. I use the 'Universal Silencer' brand, which is comparable to the Solberg with the hooded Solberg filter housing on our shop Quincy QR-25-325 and it makes quite a difference in noise reduction.

I will be moving my compressor to an unheated barn so the float system will not work for me due to freezing. I am thinking on using the pneumatic moisture-minder.

Larry, the Tsunami's work well also. I installed one for a friend and so far he has been very happy with it but we're in San Diego so freezing is not a factor. The Tsunami operates at the end of each pump cycle, but it can only expel the moisture that has had time to condense and flow to the receiver drain. That being said, if enough time has elapsed between pump cycles, you may find the condensate has frozen over or in the drain bung and will keep building up until the temperature rises enough to allow the condensate to melt...just a thought.

Hi, I got the 31 from compressorworld.com. It was ready for 110v out of the box. Discharges automatically once the float level is reached.
