Hey guys, I’ve been trying to get ahold of a quality air compressor for all around use tools, and sand blasting small projects.

I came across an ad on Facebook marketplace with a guy that bought a storage unit with two Saylor Beall Air compressors.
He wants $1200 for the two
One looks to be a 5HP Electric single phase from what I can tell?

The other looks to be a 14hp Kohler.

He does not know if they run or operate but for that price I figured it’s worth a gamble if I can get either of them running.

Am I crazy? Or is this a decent deal? I’ve attached the pictures from the post.
Thanks for any and all advice from you guys.
Thanks

Do you feel lucky???

If they fire up and work it is a good deal.

If the tanks were never drained have holes rusted thru the bottoms and the pumps and motors are good it is a so-so deal.

If they are collections of bad parts it is a bad deal.

For me the price seems too high for the unknowns.

Go have a look. If the compressor oil and air filters look clean, I would take it as a sign the units were well cared for. Open the tank drains see if rusty water comes out. Spin the pumps and motors.

If they are firm, I would walk away and let the ad age for a week and see if they are willing to do less.

I would take a look, but I also think the price is a bit high. IMO, they look well used. The compressor with the engine looks like it ran many hours on a service truck in dusty conditions. You might be buying two pump rebuilds. Pretty sure Kohler stopped building cast iron block engines before the year 2000, so that compressor with the engine is at least 25 years old.

Personally, I would look, walk away, and if he still has them call back in a week and offer half.

How much would a pump rebuild cost? I'm clueless when it comes to a lot of these things. I cant tell ya how much I appreciate your tips and responses.

I am nor sure what pumps those are, but for instance,

And that doesn't include any machine work, boring the cylinders for example.

If you want to resurrect that Kohler engine parts for it can run a few hundred too if it needs a lot of work. You could easily have $2,000 each into them. Then are the tanks and other hardware any good?

They might be an good deal, but it can get expensive fast too!

If the tanks are good, and you rebuild everything back to "new", they are still probably worth it, but just a caution that it can cost you one heck of a lot more money before you are done.

If I am not mistaken that pump itself is a 705 model. Google for parts and get a sticker shock awakening. One of my compressors is a 705. They are good compressors. Mine has run for at least 40 years, most of it was in an industrial setting at work before I purchased it during a revamp of production. I run it regularly to power a abrasive blasting cabinet.

Probably an ok deal if you can get them both for $500, but otherwise you’re buying a pig in a poke. Potentially a big, time consuming project.

Both of my big compressors are used, but I wouldn’t go that route again. A bare bones SB compressor runs $4000. But then you get something that runs probably for 20 years. A good Champion is less, and it will run 20 years, too.

Sort of depends on if you want a compressor as a project or you want one to help on your other projects.

I have a S-B 705 240V 80 gal. tank and have had good luck w/it. Bought it used, but my friend from whom I bought it, sells and services air compressors, and he did me a favor when I bought mine, I got it w/a new Baldor motor, and other new parts.
I agree with the 'wait a week, & make a lower offer.' If you can see oil in the sight glass, and the compressor turns over, manually, and the tank is dry at the drain valve, maybe he would take an offer of something just-above 1/2 asking price. For the engine-driven one, does it have compression? Check the oil level, see if the air tank is empty/dry, and you may have a couple easy projects on your hands.

I would go take a look. Reach under the tank and open the drain valve. If rusty sludge comes out, I would assume the tank to potentially need to be replaced. Turn the pump over by hand and listen for compression. These pumps are not difficult to rehabilitate if the rotating parts are not broken. Just based on photos, I might assume both tanks are junk, the engine could be sold and that I would need to rebuild one of the pumps. I would be offering half the asking price, but it you will be in for a project.
There are several good online genuine parts suppliers. You can download the parts manual from S-B's website.
