HI guys.

I am looking at buying a 7.5 hp, single phase air compressor. I have narrowed it down to the Saylor Beall and Quincy. Quincy's QT is more affordable at around $2000, while the QR is more then double.

The QR is more comparable to the Saylor Beall in price and quality.

Can anyone share their thoughts regarding the Saylor Beall and Quincy.

Also, for the cost of a Saylor Beall or Quincy QR, what about a rotary screw compressor?

I am in a residential area and am limited by single phase. I noticed 3 phase compressors are a lot less money then 1 phase. Is it possible to buy a 3 phase compressor and then somehow get it to run on 1 phase in a residential setting?

The Qunicy QT can be bought at good discounts on the internet. On the other hand, Saylor Beall and the Quincy QR are pretty rare and I have not been able to get a lot of pricing info on them. The pricing I got on those two seemed like list price. Does anyone have some info on good prices for those two? Maybe a group buy. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

I appreciate any advice you can give.

Both are very good Compressors, you'll be satisfied with either brand.Get what's in your price range.

As far as 3phase goes you can buy a phase converter for around $200-$400 which will allow you to run it off a single phase.

2car,

I bought a QR-25 Quincy 3 phase compressor and replaced the motor with a single phase. Both are good compressors but the QR-25 is a NICE unit. Quiet, slow RPM's, a ton of air, easy to work on, pressure oiled and a pleasure to have. One thing to check on is how easy the valves are to maintain. The Quincy's valves can be checked without pulling the head. This is important if you live near any saltwater water as the valves will rust unless you use the compressor enough to burn off any condensate from them

I gave $250 for mine (model 325) and I replaced the motor, mag starter and pressure switch with a new Baldor 5 HP motor, Seimens starter and Square D pressure switch. The old ones went to a friend with 3 phase power that I owed a favor too.. Those three items set me back another $400. For a total of $650, I have a QR-25 with a new motor, mag starter and pressure switch and a pump that was maintained under contract by a compressor company.

I was going to buy the HF 7.5 HP compressor as I had given up finding a good Quincy for the money I could afford until this one dropped into my lap. I am VERY happy with it and plan on this one lasting the rest of my lifetime (at my age, that might not be very long however....)
