Hi all I am new to the forum and this looked like a good place to get info on some of my projects. Anyway I picked up this Saylor beall Compressor and some parts on the cheap it does need some work but should be a good unit once it's going. The main thing it needs is a motor I was wondering if someone could tell me what to look for in a motor? It would have had a single phase 5hp on it originally and I want to stick with that but I am not sure what RPM, Shaft size and rotation I need, also what is a good brand? I also need the pulley for the motor, if someone has a motor and or pulley they would sell I would be interested.

Thanks Matt

The motor and pully would be available @ Grainger , they are big on air compressors and parts ....Not gonna be cheap though. Also try MSC and McMaster Carr.

Check the saylor beall web site it says that pump is 845 rpm. So size your 1750rpm motor pulley accordingly. Drawing on SB web site shows that as a 16.75 in outside diameter pulley.

If you need to get a pump speed of 845rpm and the driven (pump) pulley is 16.75" OD
you need.

1750 rpm motor with a 8.09" motor pulley (or about 8")
3450 rpm motor with a 4.1" motor pulley (or about 4")

If it was a compressor I wanted to keep for a long time, I would get a Baldor 1725 RPM motor.
If you search "5 hp air compressor motor Baldor" on Ebay you can find them for under $400 new with free shipping. IMHO, Baldor is the best. They are one of the few USA made motors.
If you do indeed have a 16.75" pump pulley, then a 8" motor pulley would put you right at
824 RPM. If it were my barbecue, I would get the pulley from Mcmaster-Carr. They always get me the product next day and their site is very easy to use. I am not a fan of MSC and Grainger, though I have used them many times.

8" pulley sounds about right based on the size of the belt guard.
I do plan on keeping this thing a long time. Here is a Baldor I found on e-Bay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/L1410T-NEW-...023?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a1e93ad1f

I am beting this is what Saylor Beall uses on there units looking at some of the pics on there site. I may be able to get a good price though a supplier we use where I work for the motor and I know we have an account with McMaster. Thanks for the info guys I didn't want to go ordering the wrong motor.

If you are buying a new motor and motor pulley then don't worry what might have been there. Find a motor you like and get the right size diameter pulley for that motorshaft. Measuring the existing sheave for the pump will tell you to the right numbers threat you can back track on to compute the motor poultry size. Call the manufacturer to confirm what was actually there. Always a good idea to chat with the manufacturer on stuff like this. They might even have decent prices on what you need.

Original SB stuff is very expensive and the company will only sell through distributors.

Ok, then call and get info about original specs then find what you need at n industrial supply house. I too recommend a Baldor motor.

Well I finally got some time to get started on this project this weekend.

A little background on this unit first. you may see in the pics that the main crank case block is a different color than the rest of the parts the previous owner had loaded it on his truck to take it to a local compressor dealer to have the valves gone though and on his way the thing tipped over and the block ended up with a crack in it. At that point he started looking for parts to repair it a found a used block and stared putting it back together. That is where I ended up with it. I am in the process of taking it apart and I know I need a gasket set but I also found a I problem I wasn't planning on, the pressure piston (2.125 dia) has a ring grove that is broke and one ring is missing I am thinking the right tools where not used to put it back together at some point. I am not sure if it was ran this way since the bore looks good but I planned on honing the cylinders and replacing the rings anyway now I am thinking I should replace the piston as well what do you guys think? Could I use it this way? If anyone has a piston they would be willing to sell let me know. The valves do need some work as some of them have some corrosion. The crank, rods and rist pins look grate so I think it is worth rebuilding.

I can't answer your question about the rings BUT I did read a great article about cylinder honing. Basically said not only was it a waste but it was detrimental to the motor.

If you have grooves in your cylinder they need to be bored not honed, honing especially at home on home equipment tends to cause excessive wear on the new rings and unless the cylinder is washed completely out you get tiny metal deposits in the cylinder walls that add additional wear.

Read and do some research first!

Well I got the old girl going! It works nice I may need the replace the pressure switch soon since it has started to hiss some air but other than that it is woking grate!

I ended up painting it gray cuz I figured it would be cheaper than buying Saylor Beall Paint.

I ended up making the motor mount since the original was gone.
I Called Sawyer Compressor in Grand Papids MI, they are a Saylor Beall dealer they had all the parts I needed to get her going including the piston it is used one that they gave me since I was buying all the other parts from them. Grate people to deal with they even stayed after hours to help me find all the parts.

Congrats, your SB is looking great. The brass and copper parts look like they are new or did you clean them up shiny? What all parts did you end up replacing?

I checked out Sawyers web site. Looks like a good crew.

The small copper line is the original one I cleaned the paint off it I replaced the bigger copper line and fittings I used steel wool to polish them. as far as the pump goes I replaced all the valve springs, one complete valve (old one was rusty) and one other valve disc that was rusty the others where fine I just cleaned them up. I also replaced the piston rings the rods and crank bearings where fine! I also replaced all the gaskets. The motor is new as well since I didn't have the original. So it is basicly a new unit now. I have about $850 into it total I think a new Saylor Beall this size is more than twice that so I feel good about it.
