Saylor-Beall VT-PL-735-80 Thoughts

Long time lurker, couple posts. . First Thread.

Good morning. I am getting very close to pulling the trigger on a SB VTPL735-80.
Was looking for some input from you guys on the price and lead time I was quoted by my closest local distributor here in the WNY area.

Communication with the local distributor has been ongoing for about the past 6 weeks. .and very hit or miss. Last week, I finally got quoted a price of $4700-ish, delivered to my door, for the pressure lube 735 pump on an 80 gal vertical tank, 5 HP motor. Compressor is optioned with the 230v 3ph motor, after cooler, mag starter, spin on oil filter. . And vibration isolation pad kit.

Looking at some places online . . Like Westech Equipment . .the $4700 number doesn't seem out of line. What say you?

My biggest issue comes to shipping. . .they quoted an 8 to 10 week lead time, . . Is this just the way it is in the new world? Or does that seem alittle long?

For the inquiring minds. . I am committed to SB. . 2 reasons. #1 100% made in USA. #2. This will be a once in a lifetime purchase.
I will be using the compressor to run a blast cabinet. Not sure which one yet. . Something from TP Tools or ACE. The 17.3 cfm @175 from the SB is over the listed requirements of the cabinets I am considering.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Criticisms(of the constructive variety)?

I assume you DO have 3 phase power?

You can't go wrong with S-B...why do you think they are so widely cloned?

I do have 3ph. . This compressor is being paid for by my business. . And will be located at the business.

I saw Smitty's online last week. . . . . unfortunately I could not find the exact compressor for comparison. Looking at Smitty's. . They offer a "Fully Packaged" compressor,. But I don't see it in a Pressure Lube pump. Am I missing it?

PL in model number for pressure lube, I am a big SB fan, I have a couple same pump an 80 gallon tank and a 120 5hp 1ph and my brother does as well (he has a gas powered 11hp ) and 5HP 1ph 60 gallon.

Someone might have one in stock, but if they order it from the factory, 8-10 weeks seems very reasonable for now. Getting it at all and I would be happy.

Keep in mind everyone is having issues with supply. Manufactures cant get components to manufacture items to ship back out. Then trucking is poor, so items don't get shipped out quickly.

If you do the math, you'll find the PL pump adds $455, so add that to the 'FP' price comes to $4213.00 for a fully packaged PL unit. Give them a call to verify, but that's what I came up with...can't hurt.

I bought this exact optioned compressor a year ago. At that time it took 2 weeks to receive it. Definitely a different time.

I have a horizontal, 1 phase of almost this same compressor. I got the whole enchilada, UL-PL-737-80 (707 pump, not 705 like 735-80. Pressure Lubrication, Aftercooler, Baldor motor, spin on oil filter (this is an option, even with PL), dual control, low oil shutoff, rubber pads. Quiet air filter is standard.

delay was due to receiver tank shortage.

I was originally quoted 3-4 weeks for delivery

spins at 455rpm, and is silent from inside my house. IT's the main reason I wanted this instead of the 705 pump, slower turning, good output and can switch to 10hp if/when the need arises.

Pressure Lubrication, Aftercooler, Baldor motor, spin on oil filter (this is an option, even with PL), dual control, low oil shutoff, rubber pads. Quiet air filter is standard.

Does the compressor have to be a special order to get the 737 (707 pump)?

I am not seeing this option as readily available on SB website or online sales. Does the 707 require a larger motor? Or will the 5HP do the job? I'm assuming the advantages of the 707 pump is the reduced RPMs, resulting in less wear, and noise. . . Correct?

To reduce the constant start and stop of the motor. When using the blast cabinet. .the motor runs the compressor continuously, but the system bleeds off excess pressure. . Right?

We had two 10 HP Saylor Beall compressors at a shop where I worked. They just had the simple pressure switch , on/off. They ran those poor things for years and use a **** load of air. There were weeks we were running jobs and the one compressor would run constantly and the other might shut off for a minute and restart. 10 hours a day, for weeks.
The constant run controll would save some money and a bit of wear and tear, but you really need to decide how often you are goung to run the compressor at near full capacity. The constant run controls are over kill if you need them once a day for a few minutes.

Really, the heaviest usage will be the blast cabinet, and even then. . mainly used for 4-6 hours a day, 4 or 5 months out of the year. . late fall to early spring, my slow season.

I applaud your choice of compressors, the Saylor Beall has been a very successful design and as been copied many times, if I had the resources I too would be ordering one.

Dual control on mine is set at 135psi. When the tank is full and air is used down to 135, it will kick on and stay on until you turn off dual control. less start-stop spikes = longer motor life. The compressor will maintain at 135psi by running continuously, and if you deplete the tank, it will continue filling until it gets back to 135 then bleed off excess..

Dual control added $213US to my bill.

I'm going to have to call my distributor tomorrow to confirm that I can order this set up. . . . . Or Smitty's Equipment. Unfortunately, my local guy is not the greatest at customer service. Wish I could deal directly with SB.

Update

Talked to Rick at Smitty's.

He put the VTPL735-80 Fully Packaged option on the website. $4659. Price is almost exactly the same as my local distributor. Does not have the dual control feature listed.

Seemed like a very good guy. Way faster response than my local distributor.

Still researching the upgraded pump. Contacted the local distributor first thing this morning, with no luck, left a message, and no call back. Now we play the waiting game again.

Just an update on the compressor order saga.

After a months time. . And more than enough back and forth with the local distributor, I ended up ordering the VT-PL-735-80 - 5hp 2-stage pressure lube
80-gallon vertical tank.
It will be set up for 230-volt, 3 phase, Has magnetic starter, dual control, low oil control, auto tank drain, Y-strainer, quiet filter, air-cooled aftercooler, isolator pads and spin-on oil filter.

Anyone know if I can expect a Baldor motor when it gets here? Distributor wasn't sure. . And claimed he couldn't get and answer from SB directly.

Distributor processed the order on
12-28-21. Estimated ship date is 2-22-22.

As much as TJMtl had me considering the 707 pump, I just could not justify the cost increase. It was quite the jump.
I can see why he is still trying to block out the memory.

Also. The SB distributor could not get a straight answer on whether or not a 707 pump could be optioned on the 80 vertical tank.

I'm quite sure the 705 pump and unit will do perfectly fine for my application.

A friend of mine here in so FL is a S-B dealer and services air compressor needs over 3 counties, and 6+million population. I bought a refurbished S-B 705 80 gallon vertical 240 v 1 Ph w/a new Baldor motor, new magnetic switch, air line filter/water separator and pressure regulator delivered for a price that would make you cry.

He takes the industrial change-outs with him, refurbishes them, and sells 'em. They want their paint shop up and running or whatever it is, and they don't need a broken piece of equipment in the way.

Hi its steeg..I bought a new Saylor-beall full pkd unit ..new 8 to 10weeks out. Waiting for it. Lift gate drop off vt 730- 60 -1 fp.. a 3 hp.unit. my dad had one in his old service station in the 1970s..it was quite running I recall. This is for my hobby shop at home..to run my inground lift..up..when I need be..my lift was used when I got it.. it was fiberglass coated from. The factory. No leaks ..it was 5 yrs old when I got it..I dug down 9 ft.to install it..then poured 8 in of 3000 psi cement to level it to the floor..no issues..

Ive got an OLD SB in my shop, thinking splash lube 705, from the 50 or 60s ? I pulled it out of Merlin muffler/tire shop that closed, and Im sure they picked it up used. Clearly built like a brick house. Not sure how you could go wrong on this purchase. Ive had large Champion, several Ingersolls ( industrial ), and a big quincy too. If I was looking at new, Id probably be buying quincy, but could not even tell you why ( might be because my area is saturated with them and Im just acclimated to them ), then Champion, or Saylor.
