Hi All!

I am a new poster from South Africa.

I have been sentenced to live with some race-cars, one for my wife and one for myself so far....

I have recently had a 8m x 4m garage built to serve as a vehicle set-up area.

I would appreciate if the members would advise me on building a setup platform, or some such to house the scales utilised in the set-up exercise. (Longacre scales 4 pads)

I understand that the scales need to be perfectly level etc etc, and would appreciate advise on how to achive this consistently. It appears that most people build some sort of platform but I am loath to create a permanent fixture. It would be great if some ideas on how to rig the scale system would be posted.

Thank you kindly,

Regards

HI Riaan,

In our race shop (AKA my garage) we also use Longacre scales. We have each scale assigned to its own adjustable base; that base is located on the floor in a location that is marked with permanent marker. We initially adjusted each scale using a laser level for levelness, then used the laser to make sure that each scale is level with all others.

Each time we use them we re-check to insure that the bases haven't shifted somehow (though they have lock nuts to prevent such a thing) and lower the car onto the scales.

If you have enough open space, you could also create ramps that would allow you to keep the scales in place and not move them after each setup session.

We don't have that space, so our scales stay in their own custom scale cabinet shown here:

The top of the cabinet contains the display and cables.

Will that is some piece of equipment. How much do the scales cost and what kind of laser do you use?

The scales are from Longacre. I got the smaller 12" pads version as I have a small car, and the cost was just under $1000. The standard for larger cars is a 15" pad, and costs for those range from about $1200 to over $3000.

The scale cabinet is a custom one made from aluminum (I'm kind of an aluminum guy) but Longacre and many others sell regular versions from mild steel for under $300.

I level them with a custom laser level system sold by Longacre as well. The laser system looks like this:
