I have had similar to this scam where a tech came after I did chimney work and wanted to verify draft. Looked at me and told me he could replace it for 12k. Not one problem with it.
My pro that I call if I can’t figure it out has heard of similar things around here (hour from video). Even if people don’t want to fix or work on their stuff they should know the basics and film them.
This guy could have just been using his system wrong creating air flow restrictions and icing.

Want to experience scammers and incompetence, come to Florida. It is the dream of every ner do well, scammer, con artist on the planet to come to Florida and earn a living.

When I was in the market for AC the big name company in my area was recommeded. Company has been closed and owner and staff arrested for fraud.

The HVAC industry in Arizona has had similar issues, techs exposed in some sting on national news at one time. Yes, they also filmed some solid techs who were honest and saved their homeowners a ton , but it confirmed a lot of the worst fears people have about that trade.

We had an outfit here that was reviled even by other HVAC contractors for how shady they were. Ended up losing some endorsements and changed their name from ____ Air to _____ Home Services, so now they can screw you on plumbing and electrical too. I feel so bad for their customers. There's yet another outfit that was sued by the AG and ultimately changed their logo, but somehow remains in business under the same name. People have too short a memory I guess.

I dread the next time I have to buy a new AC unit, and it has nothing to do with the price and everything to do with the industry.

4 years ago my sister was quoted $14.5K to replace the 10 year old AC unit in the attic of her 900 square foot Ranch. Told her she need to upgrade to the new refrigerant.

Luckily the 2nd opinion told her about the duct that came loose from the plenum & charged her $400 to repair it.

Been fine ever since.
