Scan Tools Launch vs Snap On

I am trying to decide which scan tool to buy. I do a good bit of used cars and do Euro side work. I have come down to two different tools unless someone else has something for me. First is the new Snap On Ethos Plus, it read SRS, ABSN TPMS and such but has no by-laterial test functions. With Euro, Domestic and Asian "keys" is $1895. Second scanner I am considering is the Launch X-431Diagun. It does everything the Snappy does plus programming and other test/command functions. Its $2495 with all the fixings. Biggest worry with it is Domestic stuff. Seems to be all about Imports and not Domestics. Which would you pick?

And any other suggestions are welcon!

I own a x431 dialgun, an autel, verus, auto engenuity, and mb star. I use my verus daily but I have to say the autel is pretty good. I purchased an x431 from an importer and got it for around 600 shipped with free email updates. I am pretty sure it was a refurb direct from the factory. Very cool tool but slow as is the verus. My solus pro was pretty quick I miss that tool. I think the autel would be the best bet though its pretty cool and even programs keys on some cars. I also purchased that from an importer for roughly 1000 shipped.

I'd buy the Launch over the Autel any day. The Launch is awesome when you need it, though it's a total PITA when you don't. We have the X431, an ancient Solus, and a Matco Pro Scan Plus. The Matco is the go-to for pretty much anything besides advanced stuff on Euro cars. The Solus is good for getting more advanced (2-way) on Asian and American, and it was only $200. I hate having to bust out the Launch, because it really is slow as hell and not user-friendly, but if you can figure out what you're doing, it can probably do it if it can be done.

Disclaimer: My Autel experience is limited to borrowing one from a neighboring shop, I haven't used it a bunch, and don't know specifics of how updated it is/was. I just know that the few times I've borrowed it (before getting the Launch) it still couldn't do what I needed it to.

I am interested in the Launch/Autel. We use a couple of Snap On Solus's normally, but have been getting quite a bit of VW work from a local used car dealership. Our Solus are pretty limited in ability for the Euro cars.

VAG-Com/VCDS isn't very expensive for what it is, and is unbeatable for VW-Audi cars. The newer versions even has guided diagnostics, similar to the VW-Audi VAS5054A main dealer diagnostics.

I'd probably brick the thing across the shop if it was the only scanner in the shop, that's for sure.

But man when you need it, it comes in handy.

I'd say go autel. Pm me if you want the name of the importer.

How fast and how easy to use is it? I've been tossing around buying my own scanner. I was planning on another OTC Nemisys since the boss and I both love the Matco version, but the Autel looks pretty reasonable on Amazon. If it's about as fast and intuitive and adds functionality, I'd give it a shot.

i own and use matco determinator, snap on solus pro, launch diagun, auto enginuity, and vag com. plus i own a few bootlegs like volvo fcr for 96-99 volvo.

with that said, i use vag com the most since vw/audi is my main work. the launch has been more than good on bmw/mercedes. it will not do air suspension on x5's, but autels will. When i run into one of those, i borrow a friends autel. yet it will code other modules i run into so far on bmw. stuff like light control modules. buy used light module for 100 bucks, program it to car and bill labor. still a **** ton cheaper than oem and you make good money on the job and customer saves. so yeah--it opens up doors that you had not opened

the launch has surprised me w/ what it can do though. i help local machine shop out and they are domestic guys mostly. i have had no issues doing obd1 gm and hooking up to ford/chrysler via launch. however, launch will not get into dodge ram-- so used solus/matco for that. another thing i liked is the wireless. i had a car on the rack, walked into the main machine shop a good 20 yards away filled w/ 3 phase equipment running and never lost connection to the car idling on the rack.

launch also got into volvo--esp 96-99 stuff that i had no or limited access to. It is pretty damn good on jag, i like it more than the auto enginuity/snap on capabilities there.

for the money, it is worth it. it is no autologic, but it is nowhere near the price of auto logic either.

i have used it on some asian stuff too. infinity/nissan/honda/toyota so far since i owned it. had no problems there.

now what i see w/ the ebay launch stuff-- those are chinese imports. the deal with launch is you get a user name and pw to go online, download files and update. so as long as you have a username/pw, you are good to go. as the website will never know if you have a valid or bootleg copy. as you dl files to a sd card and hook it into the launch. with that said, you can get away w/ a 600 asian knock off provided that if that seller/person ever flakes on you--you need to be buddies w/ someone with a valid launch to get updates from their account. furthermore, if you have a problem with your scan tool--good luck on getting it fixed. because if it is a knock off--where would you send it to?

as for the speed issue--i find it no slower than say otc/solus to setup the car. it is deff faster than autoenginuity. once i have it chosen, it loads data just as quick as anything else. if there is a scan tool i want to toss across the garage it is the snap on solus. that thing pisses me off and is what forced me to buy the launch to begin with- as i needed a solid scan tool for bmw use. it has fit that bill and then some.

do a search on youtube. there is a ny mechanic group who did a shoot out of scan tools for bmw use. i used their info as well as my hands on use when i was searching for my next buy--which was the launch.

the ds708? I actually think its pretty quick. Its way faster then my verus and faster then the dialgun. I would say its on par with a solus pro on speed. I paid under 1k for mine so I would give it a positive review. I hate otc scanners though. at least the models from a decade ago.

Give you one advise...do not buy Launch...extreme slow, not user friendly and many copies out there.

As moose mentioned, for VAG use VCDS and for other brands I recommend a real scanner.
In europe we use Gutmann, than Bosch ESI 2. Also Snap on could be nice...but you should first determine which carws you work on.

Anything's faster than the Launch. I used it Saturday, grabbed it off the shelf, turned it on, and then walked out to the car in the parking lot. It hadn't even finished booting by the time I walked out there. But when you need it, it's nice to have. Like when the 80 year old owner next door walked over asking if we had a funky 3-pin caliper press adapter for a Tiguan.

I like the Matco/OTC for its speed and easy use. Everything it can do is in pretty much the same place for every vehicle. It's not perfect, but for the $620 I could get it for, it's good enough. If the Autel is close in speed and not all cryptic like the Launch, I might have to grab one for the extra features. :D

Ill agree with that. But the fact I could run to town and back before it was ready really frustrated me lol

look up Autoland Sciencetech I SCAN II WT

http://www.autolandscientech.com/v2009/multinational/product_a1.php

its the fastest full blown scanner ive ever used. I hated all the snap on scanner since they took minutes to boot up and load all its fancy graphics when i really dont need that. also used the new launch scanner and it was pretty much like the Autel scanner. i liked the printer feature on the new launch scanner.

autotech is basic straight up data on the fly. I can zero calibrate steering angle on a toyota within 1 minute. program BMW modules easily and it also acts as a interface if you have OEM computer programs like BMW and Toyota.

the autotech is fast and the closest you can get to OE software for EURO and ASIAN. the domestic part isnt the best but its not what i work on and those any scanner will work.

this. if you work on audi/vw more than once a week, hell more than once a month, vagcom is a MUST. of course it will do everything any top of the line scanner will do and a ton more. vag com allows for some very specialized features. if it own vw/audi (skoda/seat too if overseas) it would be a big plus. theres so many cool modifications/personallizations you can do with it

you can buy autel through carquest on a payment plan.

also, if you have a carquest in the area, talk to the mobile salesman and he should have done a demonstration of it already.

I think the reason Launch and Verus are slow is because both use Windows operating system.

If u work on alot of euro cars snap on is good for light work where most people i know use autologic but that is very expensive i would start with a otc nemisus (same as matco pro scan plus) but keep in mind u will need to buy alot of different cables for older cars and if u like snap on i would get the solus ultra with euro upgarde but u will spend atleast 500 a year on updates from snap on

I don't recommend Autel MaxiDas DS 708, I own one and it is a piece of junk. Can't get any Tech. Support, won't auto detect, Their website has no useful information.

They are selling it at Harbor Freight now, so what does that tell you.

You can get the launch with Matco at a descent price for per manufacturur but I prefer the snap on os but the updates will kill you every year

But all around for the price autel ds708 is the best
