Hi guys, great site you have here. I just need to ask a question. Most of the garages I've worked at had a scan tool for the techs to work with. Now I'm thinking it's time for me to get my own. But cost is DEF an issue because these are really expensive. I was looking at the snap on ethos. The only downside to this scanner is it's not bi-directional. Do I really need one that is? Or would I be fine with this scanner, and use the shop scanner for the other work?

If you are spending the money do it right the first time and get one with good bi-directional coverage. You will regret it otherwise, if you are looking for something to just pull some codes and look at some pids then grab a less expensive one, something from otc's lower end or an actron or innova. I have a Cornwell OWC9575 made by OTC for quick code checks to see if I need to grab the big one, but I have been pretty happy with it for what it is. I think I paid about $130 or so for it and it has been ok, but has it's limitations.

It comes down to what you want to do. Basic OBD2 or do you want to really dig into stuff. Figure out what level of capabilites you want and find a scanner can fit the bill. I have a solus ultra and really likly, but that sob set me back $4000.

yeah, i'm in the same boat. i always had a shop modis to use, but at this latest shop the modis is in poor condition, screen is messed up, and there are no test leads, so i can't scope anything. bummer. i do have a couple of code readers for basic stuff, but i'm really starting to want my own scan tool. now only if i had an extra 10 grand lying around, lol. the cost of scan tools is insane. the snap-on guy had a used modis for $3500, but i forgot to ask him if the modis is discontinued, can you still update it? 12.2 is out now. what is the opinion of the pros on a bi-directional scan tool?

maybe check out vetronix? The mts 3100 covers alot of cars(much of the coverage being oem from 07 back for many asian makes) and has a basic scope built in. They are durable and have been around forever and can be bought on ebay cheap. The updates also had a recent drastic price cut.

There are limitations to the aftermarket scan tools,can't much with some testing of componets.Had a 2003 Ford Explorer in with an ABS code,was not a speed sensor and it was an electrical part.Looked it up and Ford's factory scan tool is only scan tool used to test the effected part.There was Vetronix now owned by Bosch,Bosch purchased Vetronix 9 years ago and it went downhill thanks to Bosch.Went through reps and not getting better since Bosch took over.There is a rumor that there is one more update for the Modis and Modis is going by the waste side.This is not true,Snap On dealer in my area said it was not true.Still can get updates for the Modis.Long life to a Modis is to shut it off right and remove the battery when not in use.The Modis is PC based.The oscilliscope for the Modis ***** and this is what I have been hearing a lot so far.

I bought one of these for less than $300 delivered to my door. It works great on my obd I Regal and Suburban and my obdII Suburban and pickup. I would like to have one that does airbag and abs brakes but the cost jumps substantially.

Looks like OTC will be owned by Bosch,Bosch will be buying SPX out.Problem with OTC scan tools is they are obsolete after a few years.Can't read ABS codes on a 1997 and down Chrysler product with an aftermarket scan tool,done with the DRB III only.All OTC scan tools are only good for are paper weights,broke down and wait 9 monthes to get them back for repairs.

how about autoengenuity? It will do bi directional, and can do abs just about everything
