What is a scarifier, and can it be used to prep new concrete for epoxy?

A scarifier is like a grinder on steroids. It has an aggressive cutting action to cut through old coatings, adhesives, and concrete. It also will leave a very rough surface, one so rough that you may need to use a grinder to smooth out, or a lot more epoxy to flood and smooth out.

You have a new pour, is it level and smooth? If so, a scarifier is probably way more than you need. All you want to do is remove a thin layer of "cream" that often forms during finishing and curing, and open up the surface a bit for the epoxy to have a foothold, if you're using a good quality epoxy primer just a light grind will be more than enough, so consider a grinder or a chemical etch.

Here's a Renegade scarifier, and more interesting a peek at its business parts and results...

if your floor is in any kind of decent shape, dont get a scarifier near it
go right to a grinder and choose the grit you need to get done what you want
for a fresh floor you could just do a polish on it and not worry about the epoxy

Huh, didn't know such a thing existed. The scarifiers I know of attach to a road grader and help to break up ice on the road, or solid dirt. Kinda like a ripper on a dozer, just not as heavy duty.
