Schaller Bins: It's nice getting organized!!

After digging thru screw/drill bits for 30 years I've finally decided to get organized. I've seen these little red bins on GJ for awhile now but I didn't know what they were called. I saw a Youtube video a couple weeks ago and found out they were Schaller bins. At least that's one company that makes them.

I ordered their 1" & 2" bin assortments. The 1" are perfect very shallow drawers and are great for bits. I had this crappy old Craftsman box that I got for $20 and it's now going to house my bits, drills, and some hardware.

Nice organization... though the number of bits (duplicates) would drive me crazy. Bits are one of those things that keep accumulating I periodically toss them, feels good.

I spent 15 years in the hardware business. I used to get free tools, bits, hardware, samples, etc... For some reason I could never saw no.

I like having lots of extras. I just grab a handful of bits when I'm working on a project.

These are pretty pricey! You could get the Stanley cases and take the bins out for much less!

True, but I like their mix and match concept. I actually thought the price wasn't too bad for what you got.

I should mention that I still have some 1" bins left to use in other drawers.

I just got two crates of Rubbermaid drawer divider bins last week end at a sale, I have not even taken them out of the crates.

Look very nice and well made, but only come in 24" drawer depth. If your drawers are less, you are out of luck

How durable are those bins? For instance, if you had a bin half full of drill bits and you accidentally dropped it on a concrete floor would the plastic bin remain intact or crack/shatter?

I bought a bunch of the 2" high ones a year or two ago. I would say that they wouldn't break if you dropped them full of something heavy.

The only problem I have is they don't fit in 2" Snap-On drawers. They do fit in the 2" drawers in my Beach made Craftsman though.

Schaller bins are great. I have several I use in my tool box, my bins for hardware in the shop and in my service truck. They're tough and durable for sure. The ones that have been in my service truck take a beating not just from moving around but from the constant change in temperature. Besides a little dirt they still look like new. Plus they're made in the U.S. so that's a plus. I've found it's usually just cheaper to order them straight from Schaller. Ordering individual boxes in the sizes and amounts I wanted was also cheaper than ordering their sets of boxes.

Not that I needed a lot but I always just made my own boxes out of hard cardboard. Not fancy but functional.

I went to their website and saw the various heights as well as the single piece individual bins. But the complete trays are for drawers that are 24" depth only.

That's what I'm going to do. I wanted to order the 1" & 2" sets to get an idea of what was available. I can now order the individual sizes that I need and want.

For the guys with the 24" depth issue. Couldn't you just turn them sideways to make them any depth you wanted? Kind of like I did in the Craftsman box.

From what I saw on their website they are 24 x 24.

The bins are modular, they sell the kits to fill a 24" by 24" drawer, but you can buy them and put them in any drawer size you would like. Just look at the individual bin dimensions and add them up.

I do see you are in Canada, so I guess you are out of luck, they don't sell them in metric sizes.

That's what I was trying to say. You can add as many as you want to be any depth. That's what's so cool about their system. I think people are getting stuck on a max 24" bin. Like Strouty said, just add them up...

Actually, had I paid more attention the first pic on your first post, it clearly shows small gaps in areas and it is not a single tray

Strouty, I am too old for metric, doesn't make sense but my brain still adds fractions of an inch better than metric.

So far I'm really happy with the bins. I think they're perfect for most toolboxes.
