I have seen the School me! thread of recent. Yeah there was some fun and some jokes, but I think most of us knew the OP just phrased the question wrong. "What are the pros and cons of a 6 point socket vs a 12 pt socket?" might have been a better question. This is to the admin and mods along with the senior members, what about creating an encyclopedia type of section (Yes, a Wikipedia but controlled by GJ) of some of the basics of tools and their use? Start with an "ELI5" approach which is from Reddit and stands for "Explain it Like I am 5 years old". Hopefully this might streamline some basic or "search this forum" questions. This forum and its members have been a fantastic source of knowledge and I thank all of you and want your thoughts and ideas about how we can might create a better way for the next generation and the current generation to have a better understanding of how we can use our tools and skills. (Or at least not be dumbazzes!)

Silly as it sounds, I think it's a heck of a good idea. Ever know you need to do something as simple as hand valve lapping or use a master cylinder hone without screwing something up? Or you found this thing at a flea market for a buck, the guy called it an Adjustable Frajaztic Glison Stretcher, but not sure how it's used?

I have no idea how the whole Wiki engine works, or how to build one, but if I did... Or knew someone who did...

There are enough published books about tools and their proper use..
Rather than rewrite these books, it would make more sense to start a reference list of book titles with their authors, and a brief description of the contents.

The black stripe at the top of the page includes a search feature. There are likely numerous threads on any given subject.

I think the biggest improvement this site could make is to better the search function. Never have I uses such a poor search engine, actually if I need to search something on GJ I exit the site & use Google. Google should NOT be a better way of navigating content on GJ than GJ. Just my 2c......if folks could find answers easily through a simple effective search function, not so many newb basic kinda silly questions would be asked. Anyone else agree the search function here is PITA??

I've never used a forum that Google didn't beat as long as you included said forum name in your search

I think basic knowledge is best learned elsewhere and that GJ should be used for fine tuning.

The posts that ask simply:
Where can I buy a light bulb?
What do you use to cut wood?
How do I get paint off the blade of a fifteen cent screwdriver?
Serve no one in any way.

If GJ has the best knowledge why send them somewhere else? Then we would have to be correcting their misguided education. Yes, the main forums are for for the finer points of tools and their use, but give the new learners a place to reference and learn so they don't have to post some of the basic questions. Yes, there are publications which are a great source of information and don't need to be rewritten. This was a simple suggestion for a beginners area for those new to the tool and trade industry/hobby to learn from the members of this forum. I apologize to the mods if this in in the wrong forum, and to any members I may have inconvenienced.

We will spend more time debating the proper way and somebody will chime in I do it wrong but it works for me.
The uboob people have more incorrect information than correct. Welding in plastic cloggs or not following basic safety procedures that is a great way to learn.

An example is a NEC code question was posed and one group points out done that way is is wrong and not to code.
Then you get a response in the scheme of things that is not a big deal.

So there needs to be two sections the proper way and the cheapest way with cutting corners and regulations.
