School me on air compressors...

So, I'm looking for a new compressor, and have a few questions. I'd been using a 2hp, 8-gallon Campbell Hausfeld portable and I'm thinking of upgrading.

What's the difference between CFM and SCFM and how much of either do I need to use a decent assortment of tools? Also, how does motor and tank size affect this? Just using an impact wrench, the compressor cycles on about once per bolt, which is extremely annoying.

What effect, if any, do fitting sizes have on air flow? I'm guessing it doesn't matter for one guy using one tool, but I've got my compressor mounted to a filter and hose reel on the wall, and I wondered because everything's a different size.

Last, I'm cheap. Really cheap. So I wondered, if I were to get one of those 10-gallon portable air tanks and connect it to my compressor with a T-fitting, would it provide me a bit more CFM? Don't jump on me, I know that's a hack-- but would it theoretically work?
