What type of tool kit? General-purpose for household repairs? Or like a small "road" kit for auto repairs? If for first-time home-owner, you might want to add a decent (but affordable) cordless drill; that will probably see the most use.

I've been happy with Stanley for basic stuff, like tape measures.
There is this tool kit on Amazon for "general homeowners", which might make a good entry-level starting-out tool kit:

Sears' "Evolv" tools looked reasonably decent when I saw them in the stores a while back.

$50 gets you a pretty complete set http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00910025000P?prdNo=14&blockNo=14&blockType=G14

They have a lifetime warranty against "defects" so presumably if you ever break one, it's covered... unlike the regular Craftsman warranty which allows you to return it just because you no longer feel loved by it any more.

Sounds like you should just purchase them a level, a hammer, and a kobalt $25 1/4 drive set. All that could be had for under $50.
