OK - our Gun Club is looking at installing a electric sliding gate on our entrance with a keypad. Anyone have any input on the subject. Gate is a 18' opening and we are in a area that gets snow. We are thinking a sliding gate is the way to go because of the size and we can not make a smaller opening as there is dump truck traffic thru the gate fairly often. If anyone has any sage advise please speak up.

I've used the Elite operators- swing and slider. Incredibly reliable operators. Unfortunately I inherited door king control panels- miserable. (Two parts- opener and control system.)
How many openings per day, per hour?

Place heater cords in the ground around the slider path.

Neighbor's driveway is close to 20 wide with 2 gates meeting at the middle.
He has an opener on each side, keypad on the outside with house number capability so UPS can gain access. On the other side is a cable buried 30 feet out to a sensor that senses exiting vehicles to open automatically. Gates are 12 to 18 inches off from the driveway. I've never had to crawl under so I am guessing?
We get snow and he has never had a problem with either of the 2 he has had. First one was DC with Solar Panels which won't keep up with 20 enter/exits a day. Lightning storm took this one out. Second one is AC with DC backup and has been trouble free also! She likes this one as there is an extra outlet for her to plug lighted decorations into. LOL!

How will someone exit? Keypads on entry and exit?
Ive put loop detectors in asphalt roads. You saw cut, lay the wire, then fill w asphalt. keeps water out. Not sure about hard freezing climates and a gravel road.
What is your budget? Operator, controller is about 5-6k commercial grade, easy. just for those two items- then a gate. Then an install, track, pads, housing.
A rolling gate with a heater cable along the gate path seems like it might work well.

I live in a subdivision with sliding gates.. If you have a lot of members buy a commercial operator. Also make sure you have battery backups on them in case the power goes out and you need to open the gate. Not fun in the rain. Again make sure they are commercial operators nothing else.

When I called around before doing my entrance every gate company quoted me an Apollo 1550 gate opener. The quotes for my entrance where all over the place and in the end I ended up doing it myself and ordering a custom gate online. I have my running on a 12v battery with solar charger and only issue I had was I bought a cheap keypad initially and it went out. Replaced that with a high quality one and hadnt had any issues in 3 years. I also added a cell receiver in mine so I can control my gate with my phone and it texts my when it opens and closes since I cant see it from my house.
I've had my eagle 1000 for 17-18yrs for my 18ft gate that's frame work is 2" square tubing with 1/8" wall and infilled every 4" with 3/4" 1/8" wall square and a fair amount of ornamental iron. I bet it's every bit of 400lbs easy. Considering there's always at least 4 cars coming n going everyday it sees more that a dozen operations day in and out. Over its life span I've only lost one control board that was my fault. Back then it ran me a little over 700 and the same unit now runs a little over 1,200. I'd highly recommend it.

We have a pair of GTO swing gate openers and they are extremely reliable for what they have to do (50+ cycles a day). YRMV.
