I need recommendations on exhaust fans. It would need to be 110v, and will be used in a 20x20 two car hobby garage doing mainly metalwork.

Thanks,
Jon D.

Are you wanting something w a tube to go directly over a welding table, or just a general exhaust fan, like say installed at the peak(s) or thru a wall if your ceiling is finished?

When I insulated and rewired my garage, I bought a 10" 120v in-wall fan from Home Depot. It has two sliding sleeves, one goes inside, the other outside. The outside part has a spring loaded flap so that when the fan is off, it pulls the exhaust shut, keeping the heat in. If I remember correctly, it moves about 150cfm. I mounted it above my workbench. I use it to vent welding fumes all the time, I just shut the furnace off and open the door a crack.

It would be fairly easy to retrofit to a wall, depending on your exterior material, just need to cut a 10" circular hole and slap the pieces in, wire up a switch beside it. Hopefully it's not brick or cinder block. ;)

I think the fan was about $150 CDN. Reasonably quiet too, not annoying at all.

One option for ya. Maybe you want something more portable though.

I'm assuming that the fan will vent directly outside. Venting it to the attic may be legal but stupid if you're talking about potentially flammable / combustible vapors. If so, make sure you allow for make-up air to enter the building when the doors / windows are closed. Mount the fan intake as close to the fumes you are trying to evacuate so that it is as efficient as possible. Mount the fan as far from furnace / air conditioning supply outlets as possible. Otherwise, you're sending the freshly conditioned air out of the building and that's not very smart.

It'll be venting directly outside. What I had in mind is similar to D-Cal, but I went to HD, Lowe's and Sutherlands this weekend and couldn't find anything that fit the bill. Most were attic fans, while I'm not opposed to, I thought I wanted a "gable" type fan...

I mounted my pre A/C whole house fan in the window. They don't make them like this anymore, all steal and 3 speeds in either direction.

Go to www.grainger.com and do a search on Fans, Exhaust Fans, or Fans, Duct-Free. Something in there will probably suit your needs.

If you want a fan for exhausting explosive vapors, paint, that sort of thing it will cost you...Grainger sells them as well but they run around $500 or more.

I'm in the process of installing a gable vent fan in my shop. I have no ceiling so it draws from the shop and exhausts out the gable. A friend gave me a squirrel cage fan out of and old large swamp cooler. I picked up gable vent from Lowes that has the louvers that open when the air hits them. I don't know what the cfm is but it seems to blow a lot of air.

You may be in the wrong part of you big box store. Try the kitchen area.
They use them to exhaust over a stove when there is no hood.
Some even have a simple keychain style switch.
