I bought a pile of used pallet racking and discovered that many of the horizontal rails are not compatible with the upright ends. Some of the rails have three pegs that hook into the uprights and some of the rails have two pegs that hook into the uprights. The outer two pegs of the three-peg rails are the same as the two-peg beams.

The problem I have is that most of the uprights I have are set up for the two-peg rails, and most of the rails I got have three pegs. This means they do not connect together. I have lots of parts that do not fit together. This makes me sad.
A Welder makes many things compatible.

I get the damaged ones from work for free. 16' tall. 48" deep. We have 8' and 12' cross beams.

I build this out of heavy duty pallet rack, which is made from 4" channel. The uprights were 12', and my ceiling is 8', so I had a ot of 4' sections left over.

Here, the black horizontal spreader bar, bolted to the red upright. I used a mag drill to add the pattern of two rows of holes to match the uprights.
IMG_1007.jpg
When I cut the uprights down to 4', I had to weld flatbar across the top, which I drilled as well, to mount a top spreader bar, also drilled. All the extra holes are for mounting lamps, accessories, etc.

I built this as a gift for a buddy, his shop logo is in the last picture.

Pallet racking is a smart move for your garage shelving needs, mate! You're right about the wasted space with other options. Standard sizes for racking can vary, but the most common ones are 8', 10', and 12' in height. The good news is, many brands are interchangeable, so you have options.
When looking for used racking, keep an eye out for any signs of damage or rust. Make sure it's still in good condition, ya know? Check the load capacity, as it's crucial for safety.
By the way, I found this cool website, www.rackbuy.co.uk, where you can browse through a variety of racking options. They might have what you're looking for, so give it a go!

I have at least three different brands of racking in my shop, but then I also only have maybe $600 into all of it.

Some goes almost to the ceiling but that's just what I have. Get yourself a warehouse ladder for putting the lighter stuff up top.
The top top shelf I have fenders lined up. They don't care about the heat and they are light, and now they are out of my way

It looks fantastic, but I did not see it brought up thought I would. If you are putting this stuff in gravel like in a barn be sure to have some "feet" under it. I did not have anything sink crooked so it would fall, but I could see it happening. After a while the bottom shelf was ground level.

I have welded steel "feet" to the legs, and also just set them on scrap wood, both seem to work fine so far.

Pallet racking is like an Erector Set, you can build many things from the pieces.

Your imagination, or lack of it, will be the most limiting factor.

Can anyone possibly help me identify what style of Uprights (I assume tear-drop due to the upside-down V where the racks slide-in) these are on the pallet racks that my business' former owner got? I need to buy 2 more uprights that match what we have. The uprights are 144" tall and go 36" deep. Thank you in advance!

That's called Keystone racking, you might want to look at Atlanta Pallet Racking, even if its not from them they may be able to ID the source or supply something compatible.
I had some of that stuff a few years ago and sold it to a guy in Winchester, VA. I came to me mixed in a lot of P slot racking I bought from an electronics distributor for my basement.

Teardrop beam pins will fit into the keystone slots, but it's not a very tight fit. I have a section with this combo and also use 1/2" bolts through the holes to keep it from coming disconnected.

We went from 40' job site trailers to 40 Containers basically because of economics, theft was one, trailers had to be licensed
and DOT compliant, lots of $$$ there, containers not so much. We used the pallet racking down one side, cut down to 24"
the other side was "J"hooks for ropes, cables, wiring, slings, and that gave us about 6' of floor storage. The pallet racking was welded to the side wall of the container to keep them secure during transport. We got the Pallet racking from Small Engine Dist. in KC Ks. and Warehouse One, both had resonable prices, uprights various heights but mostly 13' $20. and rails mostly 10' $6 ea. Most Warehouse Suppliers
have used racking and the pricing is good, basically coffee money for them. Long winded but just a thought about where you might
find racking at reasonable pricing.

I bought a bunch of used pallet racking from this company west of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. Somewhere on their site they have some pics to help identify different brands.

^ That’s exactly what an AI bot would say on a year old thread…

Edit: Ok, the bot post was removed, so now my post makes no sense! :ROFLMAO:

Pallet rack work bench I made a couple years ago. I put 990 lb rated castors on it. They lasted less than a week. :(

IMG_3461 (Large).jpeg

Each beam is not only attached via the through the slots but also two 3/8" bolts; making for a very rigid structure.

If you look closely on the lower right, you can see that I had to move the lower down one notch. You can also see that I have Teardrop beams but mis-matched Paltier style uprights (#13 in the last pic shown in my post above). Also shown are the retractable castors that failed after putting everything on the bench.
