School me on pipe a threader set?

Hey Fellas
Can you help me out on which pipe threader to buy. I have been looking on line to buy me a used Ridged pipe threader set. There are so many different ones avaleble. Some say OOR, 12R, 11R, What is the difference between them. I want to run black pipe for my air compressor lines. which one is the best. Thanks Guys

Harbor Freight one is super cheap and will be fine for a few threads. How much black pipe do you really intend on doing? You could get the majority of threading done at the store if you pre-measure (most places will thread once per pipe) and then use the cheapy for any extras at home.

Buy a Ridgid and if you don't want to keep it,flip it on E-bay or Craigslist when your done,quality tools/dies/cutting oil will cut quality threads.

Buy ridged 12r you can use the hand ratchet or get the 700 power head.

As said before the 12R is the way to go. The cheapest Ive seen them go on Chicago Craigslist is $175. A single 2"die is $145 alone. Just to give you an idea. Ive had mine 20 years+ and use it a few times a year. Dont want to run to get a piece of pipe threaded at the hardware store every time I do a small job. The dies seem to show up often by themselves so start with what you need and add to it as you go.

Rent a Ridgid 535 pipe threader. You can thank me later. Even after installing new cutters in my threading head, the import pipe did not thread well. Threads tear out on almost every cut after the new wears off the inserts. I also am not new to threading screw pipe, and had to use Rapid Tap for a decent cut.

One reason the power threader works better is because the die head is opened at the end of the cut instead of backtracking, which can bunch shavings and tear out threads. Threading pipe by hand is one of those "easy to say, harder to do" things, especially on the import pipe. I threaded some known 50 year old pipe during my project, and the difference in the way the pipe threaded was noticeable.

Can anyone tell me what the difference between the 11R and the 12R is?

Ridgid 12R . . . . should cover the die sizes you will ever need.

Keep an eagle eye on CL and something will come up.
