School me on pipe sockets?

I have hex bits and 8 point sockets. Do you really need pipe sockets? And why are they predominantly available only in SAE? If I get a set I will purchase these. I even have a torque multiplier , 3/4 ratchet /sockets etc. I love using and , I admit it, collecting tools.

I use them on a drain plug in my old lawn mower, but in truth I could get away with just using an extension minus any socket if needed in a pinch.

They're common for the screw in covers/plugs on pneumatic and hydraulic valves.
