I don’t own any save for a harmonic balance puller. So what is the difference between 2 and 3 jaw pullers? What brands are good? What brands to avoid? Does country of origin matter with regard to quality? What sizes are commonly needed?

Made in USA Posi Locks are excellent. Their patented locking jaws will eliminate or minimize slippage.

I’ve used them on the farm for years. Since retiring, I’ve I sold all my specialty heavy duty puller sets including external/internal but kept this basic set which does everything I need....

Most harmonic pullers are NOT jaw type pullers. They are bolt type puller that bolt to the harmonic hub and push against the crank. Jaw type puller that grab the outside rim of the harmonic balancer can damage or destroy the balancer.

There are dozens of YouTube videos:

There special pullers for certain balancer or engine or manufacturer like:

These typically grab the hub spokes vs the rim.

Google ........”harmonic balancer puller” images for 100 variations.

I think the OP HAS a harmonic puller but is enquiring about jaw types and their uses in general. [emoji3]

OTC are probably the best bang for the buck for home use. That's what I use.

Snap-on, Proto and Posi-Lock are better, but much more expensive.

My buddy with an electric motor shop/pump repair shop has Proto, mostly. A clamp across the jaws gives a similar effect as the Posi-Loc. I don't know if Proto is still made, but a Mexican company called Urrea is importing Proto clones. I think their distribution center is in San Antonio. I have a Urrea set. Works well, but you need to buy the puller that fits your need. Harbor Fright is bottom of the barrel.

I would buy a puller that holds the jaws in place. There are two types of pullers that do this. Cage style uses a cage to hold the jaws in place. They are an internal or external puller only. The Cone style pullers often can be used as a internal and external puller. I have several Posi Lock cage style pullers from small to big. The Snap On "Pressure Screw" and Proto cone style pullers would also be nice. I have no experience using cone pullers, however they might flex a bit more than cage style since the cage is down near the end of the jaw giving it more holding force.

When I was growing up, if my Dad or Granddad needed a puller, they made it. Consequently, so did I the first 40-50 years of my life. Even today, if I need a puller, my mind first goes to work on how to make it before I go digging thru the 50 or so I have around here.
I have an old radiator hot tank with air lift tray that’s full of pullers that I can dunk in used motor oil now and then. Some very large homemade hub and gear pullers in there. Original usage long forgotten.

True story:
Needed the HF large size “one time” . Of course, it didn’t fit, and when I tried to make it fit, it broke. But I didn’t get hurt.
Returned it the day after I bought it. Got the other box home. And you know what happened next. It was ALREADY broken, had one stripped center bolt and was rusty like it spent 28 days in the rain before being returned.
So now I have a new but really useless HF set that I only needed once, didn’t work at all, broke and was returned. And hopefully I never need it again.
God I love HF.

When it comes to pullers you can never have enough of them. All different styles, sizes, configurations, etc. Sometime I have to dig thru lots of them to find one that's just the right fit.

Always buy name brand pullers when you see them at g-sales.

I have an OTC 1027 2/3 jaw 5 ton that I like. It's pretty versatile and doesn't mind being used with an impact.

I can not comment about other sets, but I have a lot of the snap on puller stuff.

I can not remember the numbers but I think it is CJ series. Everything is interchangeable.

Screws, frames, legs, the tension bars everything.

I have Snap-on harmonic balancer removers and Posi-Lock pullers. That's all I'll even need in my lifetime.

I noticed some discounted prices on Posi-Lock pullers at a place called farmshopstore . Don't know how their prices compare with elsewhere, but you might check them out.

Just checked them out, but their discounted prices are higher than Amazon prices. So with some more digging, you can probably find them for less than Amazon.
