I'm trying to get a bolt to match an existing metric one, only 20-30mm longer.

It's an M6-1 x 40mm SS socket head cap screw.

Looking at screws from HD, I see an M6-32 x 60mm

I also see some M6-24 fasteners.

24 and 32 TPI are not metric.

Do they make metric fasteners with ASE TPI?

Or are these designations wrong?

Bill

And I only need one of these. Where to get?

They are not listed correctly, but the M6-24 should be correct, M6-1 is 1 thread per mm, and 24 is threads per inch, there are 25.4mm per inch

So perhaps where ever you are getting them, maybe they only have a sae thread gauge

They are listed that way on the HD web site......figures.

Looks like what I want will have to come from somewhere other than big box stores.

Do Graingers or Fastenal, or anyone else, sell a couple of pieces rather than bags of 25 or 50?

Fasten all should, not positive though, try a smaller hardware store, ace, true-value, etc., or even try a auto parts store, they should sell small packs

What is funny, is that they list as M6-32, a fastener that has in the description overview, a 1.0mm thread, which is close to 24tpi, not 32. So they are screwed up 2 different ways.

Makes it hard to find what you need.

Not in M6, but they're also metric fine thread bolts out there. There are also many other thread sizes out in both SAE and metric (look at McMaster Carr and metric taps.).....just not "normal" in an everyday sense.

Home Depot lists the metrics as diameter x length. They don't list the thread pitch. So an M-6x24 is 6mm diameter and 24mm long. The pitch is standard metric, not fine or very fine. Hope this makes sense.

I don't see any mis-labeled like that. Are you sure you aren't seeing #6-32 screws....which is a 6 gauge size screw, not an M6.?

can you post a link to an actual screw listing?

Here's one, but they're all misnamed the same way.

M6-32 x 40 mm. Internal Hex Socket Cap-Head Cap Screws (2-Pack)

Note that in the product overview further down the page, they call them M6-1.0 x 40mm.

That has to be metric with a faulty title description. I would call that M6x1.0, 40L.

Ace is the place. For single pieces of hardware. Great selection of metric hardware in stock. Open on Saturday and Sunday. Fastenal, Home Depot, Lowes, they all blow.
