School me on winches please

I know almost nothing about winches.

How do they rate these things?

I have a car trailer with a 5,000lb winch, and it has no problem pulling a 5000lb car up the ramp.

Wondering what the actual capabilities are. I can push the car on flat smooth ground by myself, obviously going up a ramp is a lot more work. Will my 5000lb winch drag a 5000lb car with flat tires and seized brakes?

Winches are drag load rated so a 5000lb car with flat tires and a hung brake could be a 5k pull where as one with rolling tires is probably just below a 1000lb pull. Now if you get a ****** block and double the cable it will give a 10klb pull and would pull the new found project up out of the dirt and onto your trailer.

My first trailer all I could afford was a 2500lb winch, it was actually an electric boat winch. I used a ****** block anytime I was pulling something on the trailer that had flat tires and that $99 winch would pull it right up and say give me more.

Winches are rated for max pull on first layer of rope on the drum. Full drum of rope results in more wire speed and (considerably) less force. Long power cables and bad connections also reduce pulling force considerably.

one other thing to consider is the duty cycle. I may be way off base on what I remember so take the info for what it's worth- nothing. when I was looking at winches at hf some of them had a 15 sec on 45 sec off cycle.

Interesting about the cycle time, I’ll check the paper work on mine and see it it says anything.
