It looks like I am indeed going to be able to get a lift for my garage. I have planned for a MaxJax, but now that I have been able to actually roll my 928 inside and see how it fits (like, barely), it looks like a scissors lift will be the practical solution. I have looked mostly at two: the Atlas TD-6MR, and the BendPak MD-6XP. I have read some comments here, but would really like to hear from anyone with experience with either. I am leaning at this time towards the BendPak, even though it is more expensive, and I'll appreciate anything anyone has to say about these two, or other, scissors lifts.

I jst installed 2 weeks ago my MaxJax and 100% satisfied. I had a scissor type and there is no comparasion. The mAxJax is way better for storage and most important working under the car
I have the Atlas lift. A friend that owns a body shop and myself took my trailer to Greg Smith in DE and each bought one.
We both use them quite often and are pleased. They roll their around a bit...while mine is stationary with a daily driver parked above.
I cannot comment on the BendPak, although we do have an HD9 thatis very good too.
I guess the only comments can make is that it was easy to put together, and has worked very well for both of us.

I have the Atlas 7000-kwik-bay from the Greg Smith warehouse in DE...Never once regretted going down to get it ....or having it here.
Haven't found a job yet that was more difficult because it's just a scissor lift
and we've done front wheel drive clutch/****** work, engines in a 4 wheel dr., leaf springs, trailer hitches.

I have the Bendpak and am very satisfied. The reason that I purchased that one was that I do not have room for a two-post lift. I use it primarily for my 930, and although I have not yet dropped the engine, I know of plenty of people who have done so and it works perfectly for them. Granted these are rear engine cars, unlike your 928. I have never felt the lift was unstable. Ground clearance is a problem, so I had to build ramps to drive up on. These are simply 3/4" ply 12" x 8' sandwiched over 2x3's lying flat.

I have owned both the MaxJax and the Atlas. I feel the MaxJax is more versatile so you might want to reconsider that if you think you can use it in your garage.

Many thanks, gentlemen. And Dolfan, your notes on arm adjustability are very useful, as well as making a "pit" for it. I think I'll keep it for a few months and if I decide it's a true keeper, get out the concrete saw. I am in Mike F's shoes, not enough room for a two-post, and although the scissors lift won't be convenient for some jobs (you and Jack O have it easy with your cars, Mike!) it will be better than nothing and I think just right for wheel/suspension work, at least most of it. I'll post when I have it!
I've had an Easycarlift for a couple of years and find it very adequate for my purposes. In fact, I got it in a group buy first advertised here. It lifts up to 4400 pounds and most of my cars are light: older Porsches. I particularly like the idea that you can move all around your car on a creeper as there is plenty of space between the extended legs.

I bought the Bendpac midrise lift like you have listed back in 2008 for my home shop when I was laid off from my job and had to open up my own shop at home. Got it shipped for about $1800 IIRC.
I have used it extensively and have no complaints. Very well made and stable.
Just the other week I had a 2007 Chevy 2500 HD on the lift for a brake job; it handled it perfectly. Max rated capacity is 6000 lbs.
