Now just a little prewarning but this might be a slow build thread. I have about a 19x18 garage with a 12x13 room added onto it. A very unique floor plan for a builder but it was a floor plan they offered. Anyways built my first shelf in the garage.

Thanks! I was actually just thinking about that the other day. I'm sure that in the future I might get around to painting it but for right now I think I'm just going to leave it bare for the time being. I actually just put up another shelf this week. All of this shelving is going to greatly help the organization in my shop!

Once the weather turns I think I will be doing a lot more to the garage. I plan on building a workbench, adding lights, adding electrical outlets, drywalling and insulating the unfinished part on the bump out (They only drywalled interior walls). So I have some plans you guys can look forward to. I may get a wild hair and do some painting...

This is the layout. Essentially I took over the "dining room" and converted the library to the dining room. This is what gave me room for my workshop which is labeled "storage area". There is also a 4-foot bumpout on the opposite side of the garage. I will be putting storage shelves throughout on that wall.

Thanks for posting the layout plan to get a true sense of how sweet that is. Awesome the builder gave that as an option. Who really needs a library, i mean come on, hahaha. I would prefer reading in my "storage room" and be able to look up and see my car

Yeah this was the only floorplan I've seen like this with all of the builders we have looked at. When I saw that I was pretty much sold lol

On your shelves it looks like you have nothing between the wall and the outer 2x4 that runs the length of the shelf. If I were you I would add 2x4 every 24" minimum for strength.

I also added a 2x4 along thebottom of mine for rigidity. This shelving unit was incredibly strong. Notice the joist hangers as well.

Definitely a good thing for extra strength. I will keep an eye on it. I have hung myself from them to test and they all seem pretty stout. Granted I'm not putting much up there that is super heavy....I do realize it all adds up though.

Very nice layout. That storage area would be worth gold. You can have your shop and park in it too! That is a nice plan. Looks like you are really getting things organized well.

Hung some shop lights last night.

Funny thing is that these are some cheap $10 lights that I got from Menards. They weren't flush mountable, but I figured out a way that I could make it work. They also weren't labeled as cold start like it's $20 counterpart...when I opened up the light panel the ballast said it was rated to start down to -18 Celcius. I've very happy with how it came out. Now I just need to finish up the electric.

Not much going on in the shop. Wife went to bed early last night so I went out in the shop...cleaned up a little bit, emptied my oil into a jug to take to Autozone for recycling, and hung my Budweiser shop light over my workbench

Nice grab on the lights! We have a few similar ones in my garage but they're not cold rated which is a bummer if you live in the northeast like me. Love that Budweiser light! Great layout too. Keep up the good work!

Installed a connecting shelf between the 2 that I already had hung. I didn't have a rafter to tie into above so I braced the **** out of it from underneath. I hung my fatass from it and bounced around...it didn't budge. Now I just need to figure out what I want to put up there!

Looks nice and sturdy. Maybe you could pick up some small battery-powered LED lights from HF to hang under the shelves to light up the tool chest and the shelves and stuff? Just an idea.

Got a little more work done tonight...wife's dad showed up with a birthday present for me. He was over here this weekend and saw my pathetic excuse of a vise

So he gave this:

He got this vise from the GM plant he used to work at. Pretty stoked about it. It's sitting on the work bench that my dad had while I was growing up.

Also setup my shop computer. It's a laptop that is docked and can be undocked to be brought closer to work area if I need to follow any writeups.

Overall I'm pretty happy with how things are working out.

Got a lot of work done yesterday.

I went to town insulating the garage and found this. Bastards put up a piece of drywall and no insulation here. I took care of that.

Next up drywall!

I also installed a box for my 220 outlet I'll be running when I get the materials for it.

Next up garage door insulation! 1" thick styrofoam with a R4 value wedged into the door panels.

Hopefully this will help keep the shop a little warmer this winter!

Added more shelving this week. I had to make it closer to the ceiling this time around so I didn't make it hard to put things on the lower shelf. I also plan on extending that shelf across the bump out.

Shop looks great. Can you take some close up shots of the joints in the shelves where you put the smaller diagonal 2x4 braces? Did you use a pocket screw jig or how did you fasten them to the other 2x4 and wall?

As of right now all I have done is just drilled pilot holes and counter sunk them. I haven't broke down and bought a jig yet. All of them have a 2 1/2" screw underneath that drills up into the back 2x4 then I screw them along the top using the plywood to hold them tight. I'm using 3/4" plywood for additional strength. The back 2x4 is secured with 3 1/2" lag bolts. I'm going to be adding some additional bracing to help with weight distribution so the shelf does fold forward.

The time has come for more storage in the garage. Operation organize garage is still in progress and is looking good. My original plan was to make it 8ft long and 2ft deep. I ended up having to change the plans around a little bit. I moved it to another wall that already had the shelf for my coolers there...so that was an additional 2 ft of length I needed to account for. I also shortened the depth to 18" to allow for more room between my wife's car door and the shelves.

I did combine the 2x4s since I didn't have any 10ft pieces for that additional 2ft of length and I was too lazy to go get more. So I joined them together with another 2x4 on the back side and attached them with 2 1/2in screws.

I added vertical braces 4ft from the far side to give additional strength to the side that has the 2x4s joined together. It's solid and they aren't moving or flexing one bit. I attached them by screwing into them from the bottom and the handy kreg jig at the top.

Final product:

I now have a support for my upper shelf that holds my heavy scrap wood. Overall I'm happy with the outcome.

I would like to get some advice from the GJ Community. I sold my computer desk and am looking to build a workbench. This is where the computer desk was:

I now have a blank slate on the south wall that I would like to figure out what to do. From the edge of the room to where it meets the refrigerator I have just shy of 9 ft. I don't think that I need to even make an 8ft bench? Or do I?

In the above pic that is my dad's workbench that I basically grew up with. Was always in the basement of our old house. I want to try and keep that somewhere.

I also have this wall where I thought about moving my dad's workbench. Then moving the toolbox up next to the fridge on the south wall and have the length of the workbench meet up with it. Thoughts?

JUst a suggestion......add another 2x on the front of the shelf. That way nothing is hanging over. Then add a 2x above, a couple uprights, and some doors. Build it out flush with the existing soffit above. Take a look at fellow member XcYZ's soffit build in his garage.

If you go to the trouble of making a garage look nice, tuck the boxes and other stuff out of sight. Plus just have an open shelf collects a lot of dust. If you just run a bench grinder for a little bit, the dust gets airborn, and will settle on any horizontal surface. If you mow the lawn, and dust at all will head straight for a garage if the door is open. And everyone knows that an open door is a huge vacuum that will **** any dirt in. Just look at leaves in the Fall. They patiently wait at the front of a garage door just planning their escape from the big world outside, only to seek sanctuary inside the confines of a nice garage, where they will hide behind anything remotely close to the floor.

You should be able to place a long piece vertical and clear the bench.

Swivel base is not the same on all four sides.

If its the one I'm used to.

The problem is if I build it out flush with the soffit then my wife wouldn't be able to park in the garage. Our garage isn't very deep.

Its not a big deal, until you try to hold a long object vertically.(which may never happen)

Look straight down from the top, Is the base symmetrical?

The pic right before your close up of the vise, that side should be flush with the edge of the bench.

I took the day off work yesterday to start building my workbench. It's made mostly of 2x4s for the framing and I have 3/4" ply for the bottom shelf and 3/4" MDF on top. The MDF is secured using my kreg jig from the framing underneath.

I also got some free pegboard from a house that a friend was letting go back to the bank. I couldn't decide how I want to go around the outlet so I just left it bare.

Hope you guys like it! Bench seems to be very solid. The overall dimensions are 6' long x 2' wide x 35" tall.

It's press fitted in...no adhesive was used.
