Drill presses make every job so much easier! Great find!

BUT.......

It's old so check the condition of the wiring. My boss commandeered the companies old 6 foot floor model drill press for his own use. It dang near burnt his place down after shorting out.

Nice find, for $40.00, I think it deserves a "YOU ****". x2 on the wiring check, the last one i picked up, I got it home from L.A., fired it up and after about 8 minutes the garage filled with smoke from the motor, thick, black smoke. That DP looks fairly decent, should clean up well. Too bad about the head band though.

Great find. A diamond in the rough or keep it rough. It's cool and a deal if the runout is minimal. Pretty sucky I'd say.

I fired it up and drilled a few things this morning worked good but will def keep a eye out for smoke and unplug that bad boy every nite.

Great find and a great price, good for you. I have the one that my dad got as a Christmas gift in the early fifties still works like new. I had an ol uncle that ran a small manufacturing business making some antiquated alarm systems that shipped to New York. They consisted of crossbars with holes drilled every 3 or 4 inches with dowels thru the holes. When they were completed they looked like jail bars over windows. You had to break out the dowels or the wood frame to get gain entrance. doing this you would break a fine wire that was set in very thin grooves, setting the alarm off. My point is, he had two of those very same drill presses that he used from 1958 until about1980 drilling 8 to 10 hours a day continuously sometimes 7 days a week. Nary a problem, maybe replace a motor every now and then. You done good

Spoke to soon she works fine but the bracket in front of the motor is cracked how'd I miss it? Over excited I guess plus one dumb question (yes there is such a thing) the chrome knob on the left side opposite of the pull down lever is for what? I notice last night that it doesn't spring back up

Looks like a model 80, you did good!

Yep, based on the handle I would say model 80, circa 1950. If it measures 6 3/4" (IIRC) from the post to the chuck center, it's an 80. These were solid presses in their day, and still are. It looks in decent condition, but I believe the handle should have a knob on both ends. And someone may have added that metal "headband". It doesn't look right to me. Hopefully Outlaw will weigh in on that...he's the guru's guru on these. The real value is whether it's in good mechanical condition: motor, wiring, bearings, lockdowns, quill movement, etc. Check the spindle for excessive runout (does it 'wobble' or run tight). If those things check out, a big 'you ****' on the $40.

A great press that with a little TLC will serve you for years to come.

I think you refer to the tensioner for the quill return spring for these earlier models. There should be a small setscrew below that. Loosen the setscrew and then you can tighten or loosen the quill return spring by turning that knob.

And no questions are dumb questions. Everyone here has something to learn, and something to contribute.

There are lots of threads (and interest) here on these presses, which were made for about 20 years. Here, and at the Vintage Machinery site, you can find owner's manuals and exploded drawings. Very helpful.
