"Clausing In-sourcing Initiative

Clausing Industrial is committed to bringing manufacturing, and more importantly, manufacturing jobs back to the United States. We are proud to announce the initial project in this initiative. Clausing Industrial, with a strategic manufacturing partner located in Cleveland, Ohio has begun production of the Clausing 20" drill.

The product is entirely made in the USA. Castings, parts production and assembly are completed in Ohio. Final inspection, calibration and accessories are completed in the Clausing Industrial facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Response to this initiative from our distributor and end user base has been extremely gratifying. This response has caused Clausing Industrial to identify additional products that will be added to the in-sourcing initiative. We hope to announce the next product selected and introduction timing over the next few months."

That rocks!

As much as I luv my 20" variable speed Wilton I just might need to replace that baby with a new one to show some support when they get those built.

In my experience buying machinery to set up more than one shop, there's:

The users: Who want to use USA products
The guy setting up the shop (me): That wants to buy USA made products
The bean counters writing checks: Who want to stretch their dollars

I usually come back with "Okay we got X, Y and two Z's We're looking at A many dollars"

"Hmm, that sounds high. We're looking to spend 75% of A to set this up"

It was hard for me to come back with, "Yeah, but 'Murica" even when I explain how standard accounting practices spread the cost of durable goods across the life of the machine on the books and how one machine might be retail/8 years while the other is retail/15 years. So operating costs per widget may even be lower.

They care about the now. Today. Not defending the ideology, just saying it's not rare.

Not only that, but unfortunately some of the top machines currently made aren't USA. Europe pretty much owns the high end drill press market. The 20" clausing is more aimed at the general or maintenance shop. Heavy drilling is a thing of the past in production with CNC mills.

Now if clausing would make a true USA manual lathe, heavy and accurate in the 20x60" range for about $40k.....or a CNC bed mill for about the same.

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
Wow! I was looking up Claus ingredients this afternoon, to me they have always been the Rolls-Royce of drill presses. I'm contemplating putting together a small shop and a Clausing is on the list right next to Ooya radial drill and a Okamoto surface grinder.
