Got a friend to help me pick up the press. It was an adventure. We took the motor off, took the base, table and head off and reassembled it in my shop. My god, is this thing heavy... I'm getting ready to order a new motor and VFD. The pulley stack at the motor is missing, but it does have the belt guard cover. Not concerned about the pulleys since I'm going with a VFD.

Can anyone put a date on this? There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of historical information on the interwebs about these machines...

You know, that is probably right. The spring on this is very strong and I really couldn't see putting a chuck key on it because it could slice someone's arm off...

If it were me, I'd get a 1 HP rated VFD, but use that 3/4 HP motor and see how it works. If down on power, can always add a 1 HP motor later.

I'm thinking about that. Have to wait till next week before I can pull the trigger on it anyway.

My next thought is since the spindle has a six step pulley and this motor has just a single small pulley, should I get a 5 step and set it at the mid range?

Hmm, Looks like we will be refurbishing similar DP's at nearly the same time! I picked up a Canedy-Otto Royal 18 last Jan 10th!

I'm not sure if mine is pre or post Cincinnati acquisition, but I suspect Pre.

My Label was painted over and after a careful stripping of the overcoat, they had clearly sanded the label prior to painting... not much left but what remains does not resemble yours... the SN is still visible since it was stamped though 3811...

I'll be starting a tread on mine and I'll post a link if you are interested.

Does yours not have the gear rack table lift? the spring loaded "counterweight" is a nice feature, but I'm looking at getting/making the pieces for the same lift for the head. (both use the same active parts.)

***** about your label Outlawmws... I haven't been able to find any information relating to the serial numbers for these machines. If you find anything out. Let me know. I haven't even found my serial number yet. I thinks it's buried in paint.

Nope, no lift crank on the table or on the head. The head isn't cast for one either. The base appears to be though.

I did get the VFD working though! Started it up for the first time today!

Coop: nice video and your drill press and it cleaned up nicely. Did you already own the VFD or can you tell me where you bought yours?

One thing I learned is that you shouldn't wire the motor per the written instructions in the pamphlet that comes with the motor
... Wire per the small sticker on the back of the junction box cover behind the cork gasket...

Coop: Nice old press. Your gonna love it! Got one similar and can verify that they are great old machines. Yours cleaned up well. Like the VFD, thanks for the link. May use similar on an old Delta I've got waiting.

Coop, I noticed you Vid was labled 40's C-O? Cincinnati Lathe & Tool Co. bought Canedy Otto in 1949 and operated it as the "Canedy-Otto Division" of that firm. This division reportedly lasted until 1956, but at least some of the Canedy-Otto product line continued under the "Cincinnati Lathe & Tool Co." name.

So I suspect yours is post 56? Since there is no direct mention of the "Canedy-Otto Division" on your name plate?

Thanks! All I really did to clean it up so far was use some degreaser and PB blaster. I've got an old Ideal hand held tach on fleabay that I'm going to use to load some presets into the VFD and make a chart of what speed it's actually going.

Hmmm... You could be right. The plate does say "Canedy-Otto" at the top and "Produced by Cincinnati Lathe & Tool" on the bottom. I'm thinking it's probably a '49 and the tag is a transition between the companies. I wish there was some better documentation on these. I suppose I should call it a "late 40s early 50s C-O" for clarity...
