I replied to a Craigslist ad and snatched up some goodness. Got a Mitutoyo indicator and a Scherr-Tumico depth mic set. Indicator is Metric, I would have preferred standard but for 10 bucks I wasn't complaining. Looks completely unused. The little bag of accessories is still factory sealed. The depth mic appears to be pretty good quality. Only issue with the set is the 0-1" rod has a nice bend in it. Again, I wasn't complaining, I figured I'd gamble on it for 25 bucks. Anyone know what kind of quality the Scherr-Tumico stuff is? Is there a good way to get the one rod straightened out?

S-T made good quality measuring tools back in the day. They are made in Minnesota we have a few of their mics in the shop. Today they make optical measurement/comparator tools. I have a few old micrometer heads from them. Best bet for 0-1 rod is eBay.

I think S-T still makes that depth mic. You can probably order a replacement rod from them. They are as good as any other American brand, but not as popular. S-T supplies the U.S. Government with many precision tools.

Scherr tumico used to be called tubular micrometer company or something like that from Minnesota. I have a big 6-12" micrometer with interchangeable anvils and standards from them. And sure enough the micrometer is hollow. I also have a 15" master precision level from them that resolves 0.0005" it's a nice piece.

I don't think straightening that rod is going to work since it's such a precision tool. Probably best to hunt down a used one or buy a new one as suggested.

Nice mitutoyo indicator, I have the same one and use it all the time when I want to feel frisky with metric.

You might be able to straighten the rod, depending on where and how far it is bent. A surface plate, flash light and arbor press would help. I'd check out a possible replacement though, since it is such a short rod, and typically the most used one of the set.

Unless you plan on using the dial indicator for a length gage/axis travel the metric shouldn't be much of an issue. Just remember 25.454. ;)
