Found an excellent condition No.8 Record vice made in England. Got it from the local metal supply house/whole sale used equipment yard. It must have been forgot about in the back warehouse. I enquired about the price and they said take it for 50.00 I almost dropped it on my foot when I heard that. Ive been wanting a large vice for some time now. I am excited I can retire or relocate my horid craftsman vice that I have rewelded the jaws on 3 times now.

Some quick iphone research looks like its still sold new for around 450.00. Anyone know how to tell the age of these things?

My industrial grade vise was the best purchase I ever made hands down. Good haul.

Wow, really? A metal supply house thought that was only worth 50 bucks? Man, lucky you.

I have a Record No. 8 that I believe is from the 60's. Here it is next to a No. 1 of the same age. A few differences between yours and mine are the horizantal ridge cast into the front of the dynamic jaw on mine and yours having "slots" for the mounting bolts vs. holes. I have a No. 4 that I know is from the 70's as I bought it new. Like yours it does not have the ridge but unlike yours it has bolt holes, not slots. I'm just guessing but yours is possibly from the 80's. I was happy to pay $80 for my Record No. 8. You got a heck of a deal at $50! It looks to be in great shape.

I was surprised myself their Chinese vices sell for more than that. The old as dirt russian dude who seems to be the warehouse keeper must have been tired of looking at it that day? I guess the stars aligned.

By coincidence I just found a picture of a tin sign advertising Record vices, it's claimed the sign is from the late 1930's.

It looks like they never changed much.
Interestingly, the picture has the squared off lead screw end, bang goes my theory that only the later versions used that, can't use that for dating then...
There was a rather nice display stand too, I wouldn't mind that at all.

Freeborn John - Those are great photos! You're right, not much changed. It makes you wonder how old the vices with the "round" lead screws are.

In the picture of the stand, I see that the raised portions of the castings (the letters and numbers) are painted gold like the sign at the top of the stand. I have never seen that before. My guess is that it was done for the display only.

You should post those photos in mjozefow's thread for future reference on Record vices. ...
