THe chair is able to recline back using a spring and has a ball screw to adjust the height.

When in the normal seated position there is side to side play. Is this just symptomatic of the style of chair or can it be tightened up.

Hi, not sure how much use this will be as I'm in England, so unlikely to be same brand.
Anyway we had a number of similar chairs in the last production office, now thrown out, with ours they had chunky plastic shims to stop the lateral move.
Only problem being that these shim/rubbing plates crack and drop off with age, leaving a sloppy but still comfy chair.

Hope this helps, wish I'd saved one for myself ;)

Oooo! Government chair! Those things are awesome.

On that style, IIRC, there's a big nut in the underside of the running gear spider. It comes loose and then the chair will rock in a 360 degree circle. Flip it over and see what there is to see.

I checked and it uses the shims. When I ran my fingers behind the pivot and sure enough a little sliver of what appeared to be Bakelite fell out. If the chair was not riveted I would take it apart and install new shims. For a dollar though I can't complain.

Thank you everyone for their response.
