I managed to score a free Wilton C-0 vice. Fairly rusty when I got it but was good internally except for the swivel hold down carriage bolts. They were rusted enough that the shoulders were gone such that the bolt would just spin when trying to tighten. The rest of the hold down clamps were not in the greatest shape either so for the time being, I replaced them with nuts. It'll be easy enough to use a wrench if I need to swivel the vice and I may order the correct parts later on if I decide I need them.

Question. In the 3rd pic below, you can see that the base of the vice is much wider on one end than the other. When I mount the vice, does it make any difference which way the base is turned? Should the wider part be toward the back or the front?

Thanks,

DC

We had a taskmaster vise (wilton bullet knock off) at my last shop and "front" cast into the wide side. Opposite of how you have it sitting.

Wide toward the front. It's to give added stability when clamping something long like a pipe in the jaws. Makes the vice a little more sure footed.

Wide toward the front also allows the static jaw to more easily sit proud of the front of the workbench.

exactly the primary reason.

Perfect. Thanks guys. I never noticed the offset before, just the difference in width. After measuring, there is about 3/4" of difference in how far forward the static jaw can sit from the base when the wide part is to the front. You can see this by comparing the before and after photos.

Thank you. I was glad to get this one. List price for new is about $750 and the Amazon price is over $550. I'm out a couple of bolts and one can of spray paint. Now I just need to finish the workshop and get a bench built for it.

It was a service truck vice that was destined for the scrap pile due to the overall condition and the fact the swivel clamps wouldn't hold. It was rescued and somehow my buddy ended up with it. He decided he didn't need it and offered it to his son and another friend who both turned him down. He asked me if I wanted it and I can't exactly print the words I used to say yes. Now that he knows what its worth, he says I owe him a six pack. I certainly do. I told him I would owe him forever before I cheated him out of it.

I know this is not an old vice but could someone confirm how to interpret the date code?

The date code on the bottom of the slide is 1107. Does this translate to Nov 2007?

Thanks,
