Scorpions!

Now that my shop is up and running I have discovered that along with my fill dirt came some 8 legged creatures with it. I now have a large population of scorpions. At least that is what I think happened, I have never seen a scorpion around here until the dirt arrived. They did not show up until the slab was poured, now that the weather is warming up, they come out and lay in wait on my patio section, so far only a couple inside, but have killed about 6 a night for the last 3 nights. I am gonna start spraying and in looking for info have found several different things to use, just wondering if anyone has had some firsthand with gettin rid of them. I have Permethrin Pro as an all purpose spray, and no I am not against using the "good" stuff.

That *****. My first experience withem was at the Sebring airport 20
some yrs. ago. Mindlessly bead blasting aircraft parts in a cabinet when
my neck started itching. Up to my elbows in the gloves I fidgeted and
moved around some figuring it was the ******** my shop apron. Eventually
couldn't stand it any more so I pulled an arm out and brushed my neck
with my hand. Felt it fall off and look down to see this 4" critter on the floor. Went and got the boss who explained how they've
flown so much stuff here from S. America that this wasn't out of the
ordinary. He got a can of lighter fluid and made a circle around it. Fired
it up and the scorpion made some moves till he decided there was no
escape then curled his tail and stung himself. I've never seen one any
larger since.

Anyhow, moth balls work well for most all insects. Something to consider.

Get yourself a black light and hunt them at night, also they like bugs go to bright lights since they know bugs will be there, catch them with a shovel and drop them in a bucket of water, they can't swim.

As much fun as "hunting" them sounds, I want to go the nasty, eco non friendly, global warming, bad for the environment method of chemical warfare and be done with them.....sorry to any tree-huggers, but my wife about killed herself when she spotted one. The only good thing about that is she said she would not go in the shop till they are dead!!!

When we moved into our new house, we had a sort of infestation, the property had previously been a solid stand of trees. One night when I was in the shower after a stint in the garage, my wife came in freaking out. Our 5 year old and 1 year old daughters (at the time) were in bed with her, she was getting out of bed to get a drink and as she lowered her left leg down off the bed she had 3 sharp pains on the upper inside part of her thigh. It hurt to walk, as she went into the living room heading to the kitchen (open plan) she flicked on the kitchen light as she felt something on the front of her nightshirt. Scorpion was heading north, up her shirt. She screamed and flicked the shirt and the critter went flying, hit the ground and was coming at her. She saw a empty glass on the counter, grabbed it and covered the creature up, then came and got me. I had thought they were deadly poisonous, but have since learned that the native ones are like a bee sting.

We called a retired nurse friend who told us to put honey on a washrag and put it on the stings and wrap it with a Ace bandage to hold it in place. The supersaturated solution ***** the poison/venom out of the sting/bite. Next morning, no pain, no red spots, no sight of the sting locations. Just a sticky leg. This method should work for any sting or bite that has venom according to her. If a little kid gets stung, you should take them to the emergency room, but if you can do this quickly it should help.

The only good thing about that is she said she would not go in the shop till they are dead!!!

I Googled it and was surprised not to see a direct answer ob *********** them. I would think there would be something at a garden center to do the job.

You can't wait them out, They have a life span of 25 years.They must be big as they are throughout Texas. They are members of the spider family.

They also said they can not sting themselves to death as their venom will not effect them. I believe this. All living things that manufacture poison can not infect themselves.

I wouldn't be using the shovel to "catch" them!

I'd think a bug bomb would work inside. I think it leaves a dust over everything though. If it's an attached garage, it could just drive them into the house.

That is what I found, although the carb spray worked pretty good last night, so does my boot. I contacted my local Texas A&M guy and he said there are a couple of sprays that will kill on contact and some dusts that work a little slower. I will secure some and test them out.

I do believe they only come out at night. There is one in Ariz. that can kill you. My Daughter lived in Laredo one time and she had them in a brand new house, solved the problem by moving to Wisc. My Son used to live in Pflugerville, I never saw any at his house.

Spray paint will also kill them. Besides they look really cool painted silver, or red, or gold...

I found a short handle sledge hammer also does the trick. Tap, tap, tap, they flatten out nicely.

I've also found them in the shower and extremely HOT water will kill them as well as most other bugs. They wriggle around for a second or two but then ACK! It's over!

Im in Az. and we get them every year, try leaving some sprinklers on at night and then look underneath what ever you can, they do not like water at all, just like snakes the small ones are the worst, they give you all the poison they have not just a shot.
One night I got in bed to find one on my pillow, it was dead and my cat had to show me what he killed, not as bad as the sidewinder he killed last week.

Last summer we were visiting my in-laws in Oklahoma, and my 4 y.o. daughter comes running in the rec room crying, "daddy, there's a little baby lobster in the hallway".
Sorry, don't mean to hijak, but we thought it was pretty funny. That one got the boot, well, the heel of the boot. Several times.

I was about to post this silliness yesterday, but got sidetracked. Great little comic strip called the Perry Bible Fellowship. see pbfcomics.com for more craziness.

Anyway, I had a comforter folded up for my dog down in the basement, and he was inside with us for whatever reason- this might have been one time when he got sick. At any rate, I brough the comforter in, unfolded it planning to re-fold it to fit where I was going to put it , and this 2" scorpion flips onto the ground near my flip-flop-clad foot.

He was pissed, but not for long.

This just cracked me up for some reason .

I've found a few in my house, oddly enough found one in the toilet one morning and another in the shower. For water-haters, they always seem to end up in it or near it at my house.
I usually find them flattened under the mats in the kitchen. They also like to crawl in to shoes.

From our scorpion battles, the primary thing you can do to get rid of scorpions is to get rid of their food. Have an exterminator spray your entire garage and treat the land around the garage for the next several months.

We never had much luck with insecticides designed to directly take out the scorpions.
