I'm ex RAF myself, where were you based to be living in Fraserburgh? I'm NE just not that far up.

RAF Mormond Hill....but it's no more.....the hill is still there....but no military equipment.

Are you just south of Aberdeen?

There was a spot just west of Fraserburgh that was used by the RAF for target practice....nice little cliff with a small rock island about 1/4 mile from that cliff....in nice weather they would strafe the rocks....which in Scotland, nice weather was rare

What a good reason for a pint of heavy.

Does the phrase 'fit like' come to mind?

Great looking garage! The board and battons against the block look perfect.

Thanks, I had a phone call from the guys that are doing the rendering for me yesterday, due to winter rolling in they're gonna wait till next year before coming to do all the blockwork. Its getting rendered in a smooth, off white finish. Should look a lot better once its done.

I'd never heard of Mormond hill, only place I could think of would have been RAF Buchan in that area. I served most of my time over at RAF Kinloss.

Fit like is probably the most common greeting about here. Were a hardy bunch, anything above about 15c and its taps off, practically tropical!

You were not far from Fraserburgh and Mormond Hill.

I've killed many a brain cell in Banff.

Mormond Hill is that hill south of Fraserburgh...it had huge antenna on it....they looked like billboards. The British Army had a site next to ours. The British site might still be there but the other stuff is gone.

Side note....the drive down Loch Ness is outstanding....in the summer that is

Mind you, this was back in 76 and 77

There's not much left anywhere these days, I'm always amazed by the amount of bases there used to be. Its really only lossiemouth left in Scotland apart from a handful of smaller stations.

Its very hard to drive anywhere on the west coast and not be stunned. Here's a few pics from a road trip last year.

Wow......

That looks like the area just south of Inverness going towards Loch Ness. I don't think people realize just how wide Loch Ness is.

At least I got to see Holly Loch before they shut down the sub tender there.

Some good memories....(minus the x-*****). On a positive note...I'm still friends with all the Scottish 'former' relatives. They all know how much of a FBC she is.....

I guess I should mention....my current wife is English...Preston area

Dunkz: great pictures and it looks a lot like the Pacific Northwest of the USA where I live. thanks for sharing.

if you are planning on putting a coat of stucco on your block walls i'm sure it will look even better and almost VINTAGE so your great garage just keeps getting better.

thanks for sharing

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Hi Dean, I'm good thanks, I never saw your post. I've been working a lot lately and I managed to sneak in a new years trip to the french Alps for some skiing so there hasn't been anything done on the garage.

The guy that did the blockwork for me managed to get in and do the majority of my driveway though.

Here's a before pic of how narrow it was before we pulled one of the walls down to allow machinery in.

16b6b68fdea85b5d7e04cb5514207828.jpg

I poured a foundation for the wall while we were doing the floor which allowed me to make the entrance a lot wider and move it back away from the road.

d9dbbd7fd919ef581c64cae800b1cfa8.jpg

The other side just needed the pillar removed and moved back to match. As the inside of that wall would never be visible it was just built with block.

I'm going to make up some mounts for the top hinges of my gates before finishing off the pillars. I'm also short several coping stones now for the top of the wall so will either have to track more down or have some made.

I also had a few minutes spare to make a quick video of the caravan destruction. I only had the gopro software installed on my pc and I'm surprised how limiting it was. No more videos till I get something decent installed for editing.

I've been pretty quiet on this recently, with the demise of photobucket tapatalk being dissabled I haven't had time to setup a new image sharing setup, I'm open to suggestions though.

Where I left off last time I was just finishing up the interior. Being a keen skier I had the majority of my spare time booked up for skiing trips so very little got done until the snow melted.

I did find time to get all the sheeting finished up on the inside, really pleased with the outcome and how much brighter it made the shed once it was done.

20180227_123017.jpeg

I had planned on carrying on with the wiring but my mates digger became free for a few days so I took the oppurtunity to get some work done outside.
There was still a mountain of earth we'd dug out to sort so i built an embankment along the edge of the field to match what was there lower down

20180224_174415.jpeg

The monoblock down the side of the house had took a serious punishing with all the plant going up and down so we just dug it all up and added it to the huge pile of rubble I'd been growing.

20180223_140501.jpeg

I also took the oppurtunity to get my soak away dug which meant I could finally get my gutters up completing the roof.

Once the ski season was over I picked the pace up a bit. I spent a good few days pulling cables and installing lights. Not a fun job on your own when your up and down the ladders constantly. A second pair of hands would have gone a long way. I had an extension run from the house connected into some of the lights so I could keep working into the evenings.

20180403_174642.jpeg

20180407_194921.jpeg

20180408_223456.jpeg

Once I'd finished wiring everything up I had an electrician in to do the last few connections and finally power everything up for me. What a difference it makes being able to use a socket rather than running extensions everywhere.

My cap stones for the pillars were finally made so we got them built upto full height. I've conduit run into each pillar incase I ever decide to add something with lighting on top of the pillar. As you can imagine it was fun lifting these into place from a ladder.

20180515_182111.jpeg

Next up I finally got cracking with the floor, I started off by cleaning it out with a power washer before densifying it. I hired a floor grinder and went round the edges taking out the imperfections in the places the powerfloat couldn't get to.

20180511_124305.jpeg

After a lot of deliberation and speaking to various companies I used the Watco powerfloat sealer.

20180520_121203.jpeg

20180521_105036.jpeg

I was pretty happy with the finish and the look of the floor. Looked really nice, unfortunately as soon as I put my first car in the durability was non existent.

So after the floor had been left for several days I thought I would stick my first car in. Its been sat outside for a good 8 months so I gave it a quick was and used my trailer ramps to bring it inside.

20180521_182642.jpeg

Apart from getting dirt on my nice clean floor all seemed well. The next morning I did a 3 point turn to get it into the project bay and it pulled up the coating where it had sat overnight and where I had turned it had heavily marked the coating.

20180524_101839.jpeg

I spent the next few weeks going back and forward with the company to find a resolution. In the mean time the lads turned up to do my rendering. First up was the scratch coat.

20180531_125633.jpg

20180531_125627.jpeg

I had to get my Z out of my unit and up to the shed so I stuck it in the corner and started prepping the rest of the floor.

20180614_202742.jpg

The company eventually decided to send me up a different product. To be fair they've been nothing but helpful the whole time. Unfortunately I've ended up with a very shiny floor which is not really what I wanted. I'll give it some more time to make sure its fully cured then move everything around and paint the last bit.

Cheers guys, so this posts takes us pretty much up to date. The guys finished the rendering off the other day and it looks excellent.

That means I just need to finish off triming round the doors and a little bit on the windows and the outside is finished.

I'll get the stuff inside moved round next and get the floor finished then start moving stuff in. Next priority will be getting the slab out the front poured and then finishing all the landscaping.

Dunkz: I bet your shiny floor will dull a bit or barely be noticeable as you fill up your garage (or hoping that's the case).

it looks AWESOME!!

i bet your area will be buzzing with tourists soon cause of the OPEN in your neighborhood so best of luck with that. since you are a skier do you even play or watch golf?

take care and glad to have you back posting cool pics and stories about your garage.

cheers

Thanks, I love the way the cladding turned out. Soon as I finish the shed the house is getting a similar treatment so it all ties in.

Yeah, a month to go. I think folk do pretty well with renting their houses out or air bnb as it is these days. Maybe I'll stick a bed in the shed and recover some costs for that week. [emoji16] I'm not a golfer myself, anything thats fast paced or dangerous is what I look for in a hobby. Skiing, mountain biking and motorsports are generally what fills most of my free time.
Garage looks great must get around to starting my own Scottish garage thread.
Thanks, more Scottish garages required.

Dunkz: if you ever slow down a bit and want to try the game of golf that is a lifetime challenge that you'll never be perfect at I'll be happy to come over and give you a few lessons. I might need help on the travel expenses depending on which kid's college payments are due, but it's getting better now that they aren't around to eat everything in site.

your place is amazing and keep posting pictures and telling stories as often as you like cause even though a lot of members don't post like i do I'm sure a lot will smile when they see your posts.

cheers and it should get quite busy near you in the next couple weeks so enjoy it cause it won't happen again for maybe another 10 years. i don't have Car(nasty) in my backyard, but I can't complain a bit and here's a couple pics i took from my chair a few minutes ago that look even better in person.

BTW there is a kid named Tiger that might just win this year's event in case you'd like to watch.

take care

Dunkz: anything new going on at that cool place you own? did you throw your cots up for Air B&B rentals to recoup some funds to pay for that awesome garage.

how busy was your area a few weeks ago when the OPEN was there?

I actually stayed clear of the area during the open, apart from road signs I wouldn't have known it was happening. Me and a friend went down to Silverstone to watch the classic, excellent weekend. I'll get some photos up eventually.

I've uploaded some photos to Flickr to see if it's going to be any use but the app is **** so its about to go in the bin. I'll need to find some decent image hosting before I can post any recent updates.

Dunkz: I used to use Photobucket when I first joined Garage Journal about 5 years ago, but the pictures were so big that I decided to download pics directly to GJ just using the paperclip method (above where we write our posts) so just click on it and then its sort of like attaching pics to an email. if you need more help just ask.

then your pics show up as a thumbnail and if the member clicks twice on the thumbnail it's full screen on his laptop.

here's a picture of my small front yard for an example.

hope you figure it out cause your garage and property pics are second to none.

keep up the great work!!

Yeah, I've tried a few options, I was posting with tapatalk but the image function was disabled, I prefer to have the images appear in the post rather than as a thumbnail. I only use my phone these days, its very rare I get time to fire up my computer but would probably make life easier. The only time I have to post is when I'm not at home which makes that harder.

Anyway, lets see if these flickr links work. I finally got the floor finished for the second time although I dont have any complete photos as I started emptying my units and getting everything moved across. I wasn't a fan of the shiny floor but its definitley growing on me.

This is most of my stuff moved in apart from some machinery and the vast amount of car bits that are currently filling my loft. You can see by the front wing on the s13 the coating of mud that most of my stuff still has after the flooding so next job is to start sorting through everything and see what can be saved and what is due for the skip.

41922729780_d77e0f11ee_c.jpg

41922729760_76cbf30ae7_c.jpg

I also spent a small fortune on some slabs :puke: to start making the pathway to the front the door, I've got a retaining wall to build and some steps, I went for the dark grey colour (left hand slab)

43015201984_e7dc4995ec_c.jpg

Most importantly though I ran a data cable from the house and setup an old tv out in the shed so I can live stream various motorsports events while I go out and tinker with stuff. :D

With having all my stuff moved across it was about time for the first project. Years ago my work was changing out the workshop for much newer, much poorer quality benches, cupboards and tool chests. I took the opportunity to claim myself one of the heavy duty benches they were scrapping. Since then it's spent the past few years deteriorating in my damp garage so a refurb was due before I was happy bringing it into the new place.

41853182660_fd2b2de0aa_c.jpg

I almost regret not getting it blasted as it took me forever cleaning it back to bare metal with the grinder. Once cleaned back I treated it with a rust inhibitor before priming and then painting with an enamel I'd ordered. I went for the same paint code as the garage doors and roof.

42758634495_8c800fe2e7_c.jpg

I wanted some adjustable feet on the table, (part of the first stage of mods for it) so I welded on some nuts over the holes that were already there, good opportunity to make sure the tig was still working and then fitted my feet

Last part was to sort the work surface as it was looking pretty rough

The plan was to grind the table smooth but after removing all the paint and rust I really liked the finish I found underneath so its staying with the interesting patina I've uncovered. Biggest issue was getting it inside the garage, there's some amount of weight in it. I couldn't even begin to move it on my own.

Dunkz: i'm not a car guy, but I appreciate shiny cars and a nice shop especially if it's a GJ member's. your shop is coming along nicely.

I have worked on a few steel benches to get to the old NAKED PATINA and my favorite way to keep it protected is to use BLO (boiled linseed oil) or maybe you have a better way. if you make sure to shake the can and put on light coats if you still have some sunshine and a little breeze your BLO will cure nicely and if you ever gouge it or need to touch it up just bring out a little BLO and put on another coat. just make sure to dispose of BLO and stained rags in a covered metal bin or hang to dry cause they CAN SELF COMBUST and have burnt down many a guy's garage and home.

take care and glad you found a way you like to post your pictures.

Cheers, I'll add BLO to my shopping list. I've never worked with a bare metal table before so I'll see how I get on. It is my fabrication table though so will get things welded to it regularly. Dunno if that's an issue with BLO or not.

I've already had a near disaster, the fuel tank on the s13 had a mix of water and fuel in it. It decided to burst not long after I'd finished painting the last section of floor. Fortunately me and a friend had just walked into the garage so we managed to stem the flood before it reached the fresh coating. Spent about 3 hours trying to mop it all up. At least the rest of the floor survived fine and the smell is gradually fading now.

Still, not happy with flickr unfortunately. Far too much hassle so I'll try something else next.

Dunks: since I don’t weld much yet I’d can’t say for certain about the BLO and it’s reaction to that much heat. My best guess is leave the top bare and sand it every now and then so you’ll have a nice clean surface and use light coats of BLO on the rest of the bench. Shake can of BLO before applying especially if it sits for a while in can cause it might take a lot longer to dry if you don’t.

Good luck and sorry to hear about the mess on your new floor but I guess it is a garage

Great thread, mate. Love what you've done so far and can't wait to see more. Garage is a great size, cladding looks amazing too. Oh, and nice taste in cars!
