I've wanted a shop for years. Well, the last few decades. Even built a pad for one about 18 years ago and stalled out as we built a house. Made the best of vertical space in my 2 car garage. You know, shelves on the wall above other shelves with stuff on the floor under shelves. Completed many honey-dos in there along the way. Even taught my son to weld in that space when he was 11 using the HF flux core 110V welder.

Well, things have changed and my boy turned 14 in February. He bought my dad's 66 Chevy 1/2 ton LWB. It needs some work, and he starts driving on his own in 18 months. That was enough to make my wife ask about when I planned to build that shop I always talked about so I can get that truck up to current safety standards and safe enough for her baby.

That's all I needed. Shopped around and decided on a Mueller 30'x50' with 12' sidewalls. Building it closer to the house than I planned, but it has a lot of benefits: wife can see us/it, utilities are right there, less trees to knock down, etc. The pic below is the pad after completion. Will post more as we move through the process over the next few weeks. Took awhile to get to this point thanks to two months of rain nearly every day and now over a month of no rain and drought conditions. The contractors are still catching up, but they are working me in.

Glad to hear you're getting back on track with a new shop. I'm in a similar situation with teenagers wanting older vehicles and needing a space to work on them.

I grew up with parents who collected classics for no other reason than they liked them. They eventually had to sell them since they never drove them and didn't have a shop to put them in.

I drove a 57 Chevy 2 door post in high school. Also got to drive my parents' 66 Mustang Fastback 2+2. The thing I remember about all of those cars were that my friends who drove new cars always thought mine was cool and they were cars I could work on. I needed something to teach my son some basics with, and this one fits the bill. Already have Chevy truck seats with seat belts built in. That's our first project once my shop is up. Lots of other items on the list. In the end, I get to spend more time with my son for at least the next few years. Then the girls will kick in big time for him...and he'll have wheels.

Thanks, man. Here are the next few updates.

I did got the plumbing done with the help of my BIL. Just a toilet, shower, and sink. Evening work in mid to upper 90's temps.

Also got the rest of the pad finished with 16" footers, 6 mil plastic, and rebar. Heat index hit 110 today. That crew worked their tails off. Ready for concrete scheduled for tomorrow.

It's now starting to come together finally. The concrete boys did a great job today.

Running the sprinkler off and on to combat the crazy heat we've been having.

Hopefully they get the shop and insulation delivered on time next week and we start putting that bad boy together.

WOS: nice size garage and great plan to work on your son's first truck in it. if i remember correctly the Mueller plan is steel framed? nice that you are able to put a bathroom in your shop and will it be a 3/4 with a shower or just a 1/2 bath with toilet and sink?

good luck and i'll try to keep up with your thread to watch your progress. at least it's not raining but over 100 and digging in red clay or dirt doesn't sound like much fun.

stay hydrated and maybe wear a dust mask to keep all the dust out of your system.

cheers

@drivesitfar

Yes, Mueller is steel framed and engineered. My father built one about 12 years ago and it's still like new. I looked at welded compared to bolt up and it wasn't much cheaper for weld-up, and those are not engineered (at least not around here).

Putting in a toilet, then a custom shower, and a shop-style tub sink on the wall outside the bathroom. Probably going to only put in a 20 gallon water heater. I'm doing the custom shower because I have a feeling my wife will want to redo our master bathroom in the next few years and that would require a custom shower install. I figured I will either end up with a really sweet shower in the shop, or a crappy one filled with lots of learning that at least will drain. Either way, I will learn something new and possibly save me thousands in the near future.

Thanks for following along. Feel free to send us some rain soon. We could use it. One of these days I plan to hit up your neck of the woods to try a little fly fishing.

Scott: i think the Mueller steel buildings are some of my favorite ones. nice choice in my opinion too.

sorry we might not have had maybe 3 days of rain in the last 4 months so you'll be lucky to see a fish swimming when you get up here. i'm sure it's going to rain again every day soon, but it's also been in the 90's about 3 of last 4 weeks here in Seattle.

good luck with the bathroom and I've done a couple with some help so i might have some help if you need some. otherwise i'll keep watching your build and with my posts i'll keep it up near the top more often because as you can see i post a lot.

I learn something almost every time i log on here and i'm sure you will too if you want to.

cheers

You are so right. I have learned tons already. It's an awesome resource for me and will be for a long time.

Thanks for the offer on the shower, too. I tend to read up a lot before I start something new, so I'm going to peruse the forums here and see what turns up. I've watched a few YouTube videos already, but sometime they leave me with more questions than answers. Maybe I will post one of the videos with my follow-up questions in the plumbing section.

Best of luck with the rain. My dirt is now powder here. Pretty rough. Burn bans everywhere now.

Been slow going while I'm awaiting the construction crew, but the building did arrive and my brother in law helped me lay down the septic, water, and electrical. Hoping to have the building up in a few weeks max. Ready to start finishing out the inside and starting on some projects with my son.

Permanent place now attached to a playhouse I built for my son a long time ago and rebuilt last year for the little girl we adopted. It's held up really well considering my boy is now 14.

Looking great Scott.

Thank you much. I am so ready to have this shop up and being used. Two projects lined up are my son's '66 Chevy truck and a '66 Mustang trunk being converted into a couch with a fold away bed. They aren't getting themselves done sitting there.

At the end of one day. These guys are booking it. My buddy gave me his 360 degree video camera to shoot the inside later today. They got the roof on late last night, but it was too dark afterward and too dark this morning for a good picture. Will grab those today and post along with the video. I'm headed out for a 5 day fishing trip tomorrow night, just as they put the finishing touches on the building. Oh well. Something cool to come home to Sunday.

Thanks, Drives. I had a great 4 days of fishing on the San Juan. Now, back to reality...and my shop.

First, a fish shot.

Now, the building. I didn't do a great job of pics in the building stage, but it's done, nonetheless.

The outside.

My next step is to get electricity ran to it and finish up the plumbing so I can at least have a sink in there. I will probably have to wait until Thanksgiving to do most of it due to soccer games, travel for work, and assorted honey do's. But, the big part is over. It's now standing and ready to be occupied. I'll spend my time between now and then reading through the forum finding the preferred ways to tackle some of these things I have ahead of me.

A newborn, naked shop! You will be surprised how fast they fill up!

Are you running a separate electrical service to the shop or will it be tied into the house?
I got hold of a bad electrician and had to rip everything out and start over. Spent a lot of time working with a single quad outlet. I spent 3 days planning on paper and walking around the shop with tape and number stickers...110, 220, lights (interior and exterior) lift, air compressor, grinders, drill presses, radio (don't put these on any lighting circuit!), chargers, exhaust fans, HVAC system, RV setup, motion sensor lights, refrigerator, welders, drop lights, the list goes on. I overbuilt quite a bit because I was upset with the electrician, but I am happy with the outcome.

Wish I could have added insulation like you have for temp control and the white surface for lighting.

Hope you can make it to Whataburger tonight!
