Nothing around in northern Ohio either. If I need sheet metal I stop at a sheet metal shop and they sell their drop at scrap prices. You can do the same with some fabrication shops. Another option is to put an ad on craigslist, scrappers come out of the wood work with all varieties of metals.

If make/model isn't important, maybe hit up a pull-a-part salvage/wrecker yard? A dented/bent hood, door or trunk lid they wouldn't be able to sell as a clean replacement could be an option.

Drive around and snag a freebie washer/dryer off the curb. Lots of sheet metal there.

Honestly this is what I'd do. Not too much decent sheetmetal in the correct gauge come in here

I often keep the hoods off the cars when they goto scrap,
hoods don't stack bad leaned up behind the shed
and I can use them for donor material or to practice with the spray gun before laying anything on the real project.. I don't paint often enough for accurate consistency.

I keep hearing about picking up a hood or two for the sheet metal and while that sounds like a great idea, when I asked scrap metal dealers locally if I could take the remains back to them and was told no, no scrap shop would touch auto body parts separately since they might be stolen. Only if I had the title and VIN for the donor vehicle would they consider taking it even for free.

Weird, and I can understand, but geez!

Not true. One I have gone to they don't really look at much. Just ask you what kind of scrap you have whether it's all steel or mixed. They weight your load and you go unloaded it and re-weight your truck/trailor to find weight. I scraped a car of mine that was totaled that I parted out. I sawzalled the car into pieces and took it to scrap. No one said a word.

You're reply better off going to a steel mill or "retailer" for drops. It doesn't sound like you want much. I tried the scrapyard thing years ago, and otherthan getting to look at cool stuff they never had what I needed.

Champion Bridge in Wilmington will sell you cut offs and etc laying around. That's where I get my metal for projects since Wilmington Iron and metal stop selling.
