Is anyone stocking up now?

Since prices are down, it would be a great time to get the material you need for present and future projects.

I was thinking this would be an opportune time to look for a slab of steel for a table top.

So what are you guys out there getting and what projects are you planning?

Bill

Even though scrap prices are down raw sheet/ shaped steel prices are still the same. Your lucky if you can find any good workable metal on Craigslist in my area.

My local scrap yard still sells "scrap" for the same as he has been charging for the past couple of years.
Even though what he pays when you bring something in fluctuates and has recently plummeted like everywhere else, his price if you want to buy has stayed the same.
I know what prices are from the mill and local suppliers so I take that into account if something comes in.

I am just stocking up on scrap. Shipped out 100 tons last month because I had no more room at work and 10 Toms at my hobby shop.

Prices are up about 15 percent in the Midwest for January. Prices will be under 100 a ton for a while.

The scrap yards are also getting very picky on the grades they are paying up for.

I scrap as a part time and sometimes full time job. Good usable steel is always the same price thats how the yards make money. Its called supply and demaned or i have something you need.Plate steel is hard to find there just isnt alot of it used to make stuff were it would be in a very big piece.I build stuff my self and i am always looking even for pieces around 6" square. Scrap has come up and i hope it gos up some more but i dont belive it will ever be as high as it was.

I bought some new steel at $0.40/lbs the other day. Down from $0.50/lbs a year or so ago. I didn't make a big purchase. If I had, I could probably have haggled the price a little lower.

I picked up a pile of usable steel at an auction a month or so ago for about 3 cents a pound cause the scrappers didn't want it for that price, but that's about it, scrap yards and Cl still want normal prices.

The scrap yard here got rid of most of the steel on their yard a few years ago. They have tons of aluminum but no steel really to speak of. I think he saw it coming and sold it all off.

We pay 25 cents a pound for scrap here. The yard operator looked at me like I was crazy when I agreed to pay that much.....for 7 Model A engines

My local steel supplier charges .55/lb for new. Not cheap, and he has a huge supply of everything under the sun, but that's what it is. Bought some steel square tubing, angle, and a 3'x5'x1/2" plate. He also charged $24 for a 3' drop of 2.5"x2.5" x1/4".

The price of steel SHOULD be going down as there is now a large over-capacity in the market place.

Steel Is the Poster Child For Oversupplied Commodity Markets, and It's in Shambles

I don't have any specifics, but I know scrap copper and brass are down. I am not certain about scrap aluminum, but I know Alcoa is having a very tough time. Hard to believe because the demand for aluminum in the auto industry is through the roof ! (In case you have been sleeping, the next gen F250/350 and expedition/Navigator will have aluminum bodies.) Besides body panels, many front and rear suspension components are now forged aluminum as are more than 75% of all the gasoline engines sold in light vehicles.

Same story here.
One sells scrap/rems at 30 cents/lb, the other scrap yard sells discarded rems for 40 cents/lb.

Most new hot rolled is 80 cents/lb or more unless you buy in quantity in these parts.

Scrap aluminum was about 1/2 what it used to be (perhaps 5-10 years ago), the last time I took some in. The auto industry may need a different type of aluminum than what most people are scrapping.

That pretty much sums it up. I will go with his answer.

Looks like it's still dropping. I bought some new 1/8" sheet last week at $0.30/lbs. New 2"x2"x1/4" angle was still at $0.40/lbs

Word just came in from our suppliers Steel prices are jumping $0.04 per pound May 1st. They are going to run the pricing up.

They are not importing as much from China and the Mills that were idle will continue to idle. Speculation, all June commodity sales are locked.

Hang on for the ride guys scrap will soon follow.

That is the word on the street.

From our Recycler moments ago:

"I am sure you will see some pretty big increases. Since February, your scrap steel price is up 40%. Right now May looks like another up month but it is a little too early to tell. So far this year though, up is definitely the trend, with ferrous prices a low as they were last year it was bound to happen."

Sent my boy with a small load while back. They gave him zero.
Was less than 800 lbs.
Like RivennHewn said "Beats paying transfer station fees".
I did tell him, going in, he would be lucky to buy a burrito with the money he got.

There's a place I buy from next town over where I can grab a sheet 4x8 of 16 gauge steel for about $60. I don't know what the price per pound comes out to be, but it's cheaper than any other place around here.
I haven't made money on scrap in years, though. Last load was probably half a ton and paid maybe $7 and change. That's a far cry from when I started in 08-09 and was taking $200/ton, and the old timers told me that was bad then!

Went to my steel supplier today. They said pricing is starting to go up. That's good because I have a trailer full to drop off.

I've been sitting on about 1500lbs of aluminum chips for over a year waiting for prices to come up. 1500 lbs of aluminum chips takes up a lot of sq-ft...

Steel chips (they call them turnings) have been around $60/ton for the last year. I was getting twice that 2 years ago. I take in 3000-4000lbs every 3 months.

We got $110/ton for #1 prepared steel about a month ago. That was almost $300/ton 6 years ago.

The good thing is that new steel and aluminum prices are down as well. I buy almost $100,000 in steel and aluminum every year and prices were lower this year than they have been in the last 6 years.

Globally things are slowing down...
Australian steel has for the last decade supplied the chinese boom...
However in the last 6 months things have slowed considerably. Many large steel refiners have gone into administration and the exports to china have dried up..
