I`ve been picking up scrap metal lately for extra $$. Last night I found an older Craftsman metal tool box, small one with a lid and tray inside...but it`s mounted on a lil dolly...I assume for use in a warehouse maybe?? It stayed at home while i went to the scrap yard today.

While there I always look around to see what others felt was only worth scrap. Last week a guy dumped off an old craftsman roller cabinet next to me filled with tools, nuts, bolts, etc, etc. I had to fight off a buncha mexicans to get a handful of stuff out of it...lol. The other day I found a pair of Klein wire strippers/crimpers,just needed some oil.

Today I saw a Snap-On YA165 battery charger as soon as I get out of my van. Someone cut the cables off of it (coated wire is $1.00 a pound),and the knob and gauge face broke when they tossed it in the pile. So I grabbed that, then when we were getting ready to leave we spotted something small and shiny...it was a brand new Craftsman stud remover tool. Both cost me their weight in scrap. About $0.10 a pound.

I took the charger apart tonight and spliced in another power cord, plugged it in,and it works. WTF is wrong with people???? Now to find a new pair of leads for it,a gauge, and a selector knob. Anyone know if either of those is available anywhere??

Pics to follow.

You can find some jewells at the **** yard if you know what you are looking for. On other news the local pawn shop close to my house has buckets of sockets for 25 cents each no matter what brand they are.

Brought in 2 loads today. While I was dropping off the first load,a guy next to me pulled up and started tossing **** outta his van. He tossed a Waterloo tool cabinet out,but he F`d it up pretty good. I decided to watch him,and as soon as he left I grabbed the Craftsman drill press (works!),the lil china mini-vise,and the allen wrench. On the way home to get the second load I found the floor jack, and while at the yard the second time, the guy next to me tossed off the Craftsman cantilever box which is in overall great condition. The jack was free, rest was cost of scrap...about .10 a lb.

Anyone know what kind of jack it is?? The data plate/sticker is MIA. Looks like a quality older unit, looks to need a rebuild.

That jack is an old USA made Hein Werner. Very nice jack. Check out Elroy's rebuild thread

I'd bet there's more stolen stuff there than you care to think about.

Nobody knows how to fix anything anymore. If it breaks, we junk it and buy another Chinese one.

Back in the mid 1980's the plating shop i worked for would sell their scrap plated parts for cash.We would go to the St.louis auto shredders in East St.louis,IL. to dump the scrap off.It was UNREAL the stuff that layed around. One time i was there and a local G.M./Chevy dealership was scrapping new old stock(over 10 years old) parts like emblems, pistons, intake manifolds,engines...still in the boxes, huge piles of the stuff.I managed to snag 2 new Z/28 emblems while the guards were looking the other way. There was coins littering the ground. In the office there was 13,15 gallon barrels full of damaged coins that went through the shredder. They estimated the value at over $130,000,all they had to do was turn it in to the U.S. mint/treasury department to get the full face value of the coins. They would dump the cars into the shredder,it would chop them up,and separate the materials that went in.Like plastic in one pile, glass in another, copper in another, coins in another, etc.Truly amazing. The sad part was that all recycled metal was sold to japan and china.....what a bummer.

Thats accountants and our tax code for you, a screwy situation where inventory=money. I've always liked to call these kinds of shenanigans as "accounting magic". I guess I'm just not smart enough to understand .

I've heard some stories about the US pull-out from Vietnam which included dumping military helicopters and fixed wing aircraft off the sides of aircraft carriers, by the hundreds. Seriously, WTF??

MasterBlaster, are you from the STL area? I lived there up until recently.

Yes,i live in Granite City,3 miles east, across the Mississippi River.I heard from the guys that worked there that the dealerships could write off the loss for taxes. There were carbs.,intakes,tools,fenders,etc.It looked like a tractor-trailer unloaded the stuff,i was in disbelief when i saw it....what a waste.

We scrap most anything thats "over 12" on a monthly basis. Yes I have entire room of "profit" parts sitting there. Someone asks for something and it gets plus'd back onto the system at .01 cost and sold at full boat retail. Sometimes I'll make the customer a deal because its all profit for me. My GP goes through the roof on something I technically already paid for. Its fun stuff actually. We can play with the "books" more than people think... parts depts run properly can be a cash cow for a dealership. Wait I might have divulged too much! Seriously though.. this is all high end cars too.. not your typical Ford/GM stuff. I bet those guys throw away (heck I know they do.. I've picked through some of it before) TONS of stuff. We keep a pretty tight inventory so we don't write off a ton. A lot gets returned, etc.
