Does anybody here know of a scrapyard in or around the Connecticut area that will let you go pick and buy stuff by the pound? There used to be a small one in Norwich but I don't think they are open any more. I need to replenish my stock of steel for different fabrication projects I'm working on and really don't want to buy or pay the price for 20' long pieces. Any suggestions?

Logan steel in Meriden

They have a scrap tent (collapsed a month or so ago from snow) that you can pick thru.

There are lots of bits: drops, random blanks, cutouts, tubing, square tubes, sheet, plate, pipe, steel, stainless, aluminum, etc. I have gotten some cool stuff there.

One thing was a 24" circle in 1/4" steel. Perfect for my panel beater bag once I made a stand for it. Paid about 5 bucks for it.

Latest thing in the tent were two Gulf gas station signs, about 36" across, lexan not metal, but cheap and great garage swag.

All the stuff is sold by the pound.

No affiliation.

Any idea what they charge per pound? I remember going there a number of years ago and they wanted around $5 a pound for aluminum. I could have bought it new for about the same price. Most of what I need is steel so maybe they have better prices on it.

Does Calamari's have any rules such as certain times or days of the week they allow picking?

I'm not really sure. I've always just gone there and they point me in the general direction of their used steel pile.
