Screen Door for your Garage

I was at the Home and Garden show this weekend , getting ideas for the house when I ran across this:

It is a screen door that fits on a track placed below your regular garage door. A standard 2 car garage screen only weighs 42 lbs.

He was swamped at the show so I didn't get a chance to ask about pricing, I have asked for a quote so I'll let you know what I find out.

I called a local installer of a similar brand/design. I think they wanted $1,500 to install the screen doors to my double-door. One bad thing was it'd take some desperately needed height away from my already too short garage opening.

$1500? Wow. I put a roll up type screen on my attached garage many years ago. It attached all the way around with velcro and has zippers down both sides. Only takes a moment to roll up.

Now that's a clever idea! When I lived at the coast sometimes the warm weather gnats and biting flies were the pits for garage or outdoor work. Inland not such a regular problem, but I'll keep that idea in mind.

Yeah, the guy wanted to schedule a time for me to visit one of his latest installations to see what it is/does. I didn't take him up on his offer.

I don't doubt it's nice, and better built than the rollup+velcro kind... but not that much better.

Better design would be roll-up kind that people with high-end houses put on porch . . . ie it goes up in cavity that is hidden by trim boards.

However, the one displayed by OP would definitely have more security features since it's rigid. I'm guessing these will be popular for homeowners who can afford it. If my house had 2 individual doors, I'd sure like for one of them to have screen like the OP shows.

I'd like to invent a hybrid panel that had "fold-out" sections built in just like your normal windows in house, but when opened the screen would be there. For that matter, it would be way cool to have a panel in garage door that had BOTH windows, and functional screens for those windows!!

Please remember, that number was from something another poster saw. I am waiting on an estimate for a standard 2 car garage. I will post that when I get the info.

Oh, the $1500 was for a motorized screen door. I couldn't tell if the OP's picture showed a motor or not. I wouldn't consider anything but a motorized screen door. Me having to raise/lower whenever the Mrs wanted in/out would get old really quick.

I called the company for a quote, talked a sales rep and they never called me back. It seems like a neat idea, but that's $1500 I could spend a tools, storage, etc.

Got a call back late yesterday, $1,100 for the basic model, $1,300 for the upgraded white screen. Too rich for me, but I still love the idea.

I suspect you could use whatever aluminum tubing is used on screened lanais down here in Florida.

Another cool option might be to make it out of 8020.

I examined a patent for one of these. I think it was Lifestyle Screens out of GA or Florida. Not sure how much $$ they run though. Tons of different variations of garage door screens out there.
