Did first oil change on Toyota Avalon and I used this funnel I bought that screws in where the oil cap goes. It worked great with no mess. The company that makes them does so for other motors too. The company is Assenmacher Specialty Tools, Inc.

They are an excellent source for high quality specialty tools; I've bought tools form them for years and never had a problem.

That's pretty fancy there .. I believe Snap On is selling something similar; saw it on PTEN a few months back.

That's pretty nice! Though I don't see the advantage of this over a regular funnel other than being able to pour oil with both hands instead of one holding the funnel.

You are absolutely correct. If you can pour oil and hold the funnel without ever making a mess then buying something like this is a complete waste of money.

I change the oil on lots of cars and I usually don't make a mess but when I do it's a pain to clean up. I would not mind having a funnel for each of my cars that attached to the vavle cover if they were available.

I'd be too tempted to throw marbles at it if I saw it in someone's engine.

:lol_hitti

I think this funnel is not for me, but I can appreciate it's value to someone. What I would really love to see is a funnel that is collapsible and doubles as an oil cap. so it's always at the ready when needed, even out and about. maybe i feel a patent coming on :bounce:

How big do they go? guess ill go check it out later. I know a few old guys at work that need them when we are filling up the heavy equipment with the 5 gal drums they get the shacks and get more on them and the machine then they get in the tank :lol_hitti

We used to have a hand pump till one of them leaned it up agents a a tire and ran over it..:wtf:

I've got a car that basically has just that. That car is a huge pain to add oil to after it's drained for oil change. The oil cap comes off then you pull out a collaspable funnel and add oil or or at least try to. You can put in the first 7or 8 liters without to much mess. But the last 3.5 to 4 liters can be a pain.

The source of the problem or at least part of it is the built in strainer in the botton of the funnel and the slow, slow rate at which the oil can be filled. If you put in to much oil find out after the motor gets up to operating temperature. You will then be spending the next day cleaning up the mess.

The car is an air-cooled Porsche with about a 12 liter oil capacity.

I use an empty Smirnoff 1.75 liter plastic bottle. I cut off the bottom and presto...instant screw in funnel. Threads are not a perfect match for all my cars but close on most. Mobil 1 bottles fit in it nicely. Not my idea, I got it from Ravenwing Performance. cheers!

Here's an alternative. I got something similar for $.50 at the auto parts store. It screws onto the quart of oil, instead of into the car. It doesn't leak when turned upside down.
(I don't have one this fancy, but the concept is the same)

Topped up the oil yesterday and the new one *****. I'm glad I hadn't thrown my old one away.
Two funnels, one a good un the other, rubbish, Who'da thunk it?

That's funny, when I push the shopping cart behind my "beloved", I wonder what the heck happened to her behind.:headscrat

My coworker at the next bay uses a spring water bottle with the bottom cut out.

BG Products gave us some long funnels for free. I asked for an extra one and chopped it down to the right diameter.

The threaded Snapon Toyota/Lexus funnel is almost $30,no thanks :wtf:

This funnel only fits toyota type engines that are a hassle to fill, so far it only fits v6's ive worked on and it does work great but it is 80.00 plus dollars from snap on.

Regular funnels do not fit very well due to the baffle inside the valve cover. The baffle causes overflow or the funnel falling out of place.

These are really handy on the Lexus LS460's, the oil filler cap is down in a plastic engine cover. It'd be impossible to pour without this funnel and not make a huge mess on a 70k+ car.

The funnel is $28.75 plus sales tax from Snapon. Cheaper than getting it from Assenmacher.

Funnel

They also have one for Honda/Acura/Nissan for the same price.

I feel so trashy. I grab a handful of the paper throw-aways from the gas station every few months. Things prop up in the valve cover enough to hold both quart and even the gallon jugs.

Back when I was a Volvo tech, I made a similar funnel once Volvo went to the internal baffle inside the valve cover.

Took an old oil fill cap (junkyard; all Volvos used the same cap); and took a large capacity funnel. Drilled the cap out through the top, and retained the gasket and "ears" on the oil fill cap. Insert funnel through cap; cut off any excess funnel snout, and used a heat gun to melt it all together. A bit of RTV sealer on the outside where the two meet, and it worked like a charm.

When I left, I sold my FrankenFunnel for a cool $25.00 to the tech who'd always been borrowing it from me.

That's pretty slick. I did something similar for the radiator on my POS taurus, as well as a make shift pressure tester using the same hacked up cap and a bike pump :D

No it's not. I've serviced several LS460s and LS600s using my modified funnel.

LOL I was thinking of the same idea before, but I don't have any Toyota/Lexus oil caps lying around.

Ron - while I haven't seen it personally,I've been told of ES350 owners complaining of an engine noise after getting an oil change from a quickie-lube shop. It turns out the baffles got bent after they jam their oil guns into the filler tube.

I never said a home made job wouldn't work, I just said it's handy to have. I was using a home made one using the top of an oil bottle until I got this for free at school.

I've used one of these for many years, No Spill Oil Spout $1.49 at Napa. Screws onto oil bottle, put the spout in the valve cover, then half turn to open the valve. The valve will drip if you leave the bottle on it's side for a long time, but not a problem in normal use. After use, I chuck it into a plastic box to keep it clean for next time. No funnel to clean. http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?R=BK_7201044_0254089264

I am I the only one that doesn't use a funnel?

I just flip the jug over quickly and stick in the hole.

Depends on the car.

If I did that in the Sienna, I'd have oil all over the place. Oil flows in quicker than it has a chance to drain past the baffle in the valve cover.

Won't work on the 535. The opening is too far down in the bay.

It would work in the M3 though and that's what I usually do.

The AST's are a great idea if you were a lube tech and did a lot of preventive maintenence but a better idea would be the funnel with interchangable tips to fit various applications. I could see that being a better seller.

By the way, I have a stainless steel funnel I got from my father. Works great.
