Screw Sizes for 14 gauge garage door hinges

I'm need screws with washer heads for 14 gauge garage door hinges. The hinges I'm replacing all use a 7/16 socket, but some don't have the washer heads. Went to the hardware store and they don't have that size.

Guy at the hardware store says use coarse thread, that the fine thread ones strip to easily.

I'm going by the socket size (7/16), I don't know the screw sizes. What should I be using to replace these hinges?

Thanks

I am not sure what a 14-ga hinge is exactly. What is the application, a household door or something smaller?

In door hinges I have often used the GRK-R4 screw (think of a flathead torx drive deck screw) in #9 or #10 size to get deeper into the framing when an original shorty screw that just went into the jamb got stripped out.

If you truly want a washer head you can use the GRK-Cabinet screws which are smaller diameter but come in different lengths, I think up to the 2" range

Thanks that helps.

The 7/16" hex says to me its a 1/4-20 thread.

I put "garage door hinge screw" into google and come up with several hits. Its basically a self drilling TEK screw.

If your screw thread is stripped you might have to resort to a 5/16"-18 self tapper which isn't a standard size. Beware that a 5/16" TEK screw references the hex size for a #10 screw and not the bolt's major thread diameter as is typically the case.....

Any place that sells, installs & services garage doors might be willing to sell you a handful. The one I deal with is a family operation and I feel certain they would try to help if they could.

Thanks for the replies. I measured the old screws with a caliper, they are 1/4". I discovered 1/4" comes with different head sizes. The ones I took off were 7/16" head. I wanted to stay with the same head size, so if I ever had to take them off again I wouldn't have to keep switching sockets. Alas the local hardware store has them with 3/8" head. Guess I'll have to mix.

If you replace all the screws at once, they will match after when you are done with the modifications.
