I was thinking the other day about screwdrivers I don't know why but wondered about the evolution of the screwdriver handle, there are plenty of good quality screwdrivers being made by different companies but when did the handles go from the old style acetate see through handles like the old sk green and white ones to the ergonomic comfort grip handles you see today?

I also wonder why it is that the majority of the better quality screwdriver makers seem to rampantly use the more modern handle types and went away from the old tyle handle where as some of the more budget minded brands still use the old handle but may not have the same shaft and tip strength as the better brands.

So to all you reguler screwdriver users what are your oppinions on the many different screwdriver handles and how things have changed over the years.

Yeah I know its kind of silly really because we buy tools to use and do work and whatever and as you say the modern ones are good to grip and good on your hands and stuff but the old ones sure do look cool.

look at pb swiss they offer some with the old style handle

I noticed that, I don't personally need to buy screwdrivers right now it was just something I was wondering about. If I ever need to buy screwdrivers I would probably buy some snap-on ones. Used some a while back and liked them they are one of the nice modern style screwdrivers.

Just one guys opinion here, the acetate handles are tuff, they take abuse, automotive chemicals do not hurt them and they last. I do not like the comfort handles as they soak up oil like a sponge and can never be clean. The pb swiss multicraft handle is a comfortable handle that will last and is comfortable in the hand.

While old screwdrivers might look nicer the modern day ergonomic handles offer a better grip and higher torque transfer due to the rubber coated handles which have a larger surface area.

I've always used the hard plastic handles and using them for any length of time killed my arthritic hands. I picked up some screwdrivers with the new ergonomic handles and love them.
