Man, I have a deep drawer full of screwdrivers.... I keep buying sets and throwing them in there! I need a good way to organize them, and get rid of a bunch of them...

Its hard, I have the tendancy to not want to get rid of tools.. sometimes I think this is a curse.. to many makes the box too cluttered.. I should make up a took kit with just the spares for my father! :)

What do you guys do for organizing screwdrivers etc..

I just line mine up in the drawer largest to smallest with all the same type together. Nothing fancy, always worked for me.

If you have a permanent set of screwdrivers that you won't think you'll add or break the set you can tool foam the drawer. Which is something i would like to do if and when i think i had enough and designate that drawer as the screwdriver drawer.

Cascade tool foam

I even requested a sample its pretty tough compared to the one you can buy at sears.

I keep a couple of screwdriver sets in the shallow drawers of my tool boxes and a big bunch of assorted ones in a plastic rack (like the one pictured) on the wall. If a relative needs a screwdriver the ones on the wall are in plain sight and the ones in the tool box are not disturbed.

it's a good way to store your nut drivers too.

I use both the wall rack and my tool box. My wife and kids are always looking for a screw driver or pliers for some job they're doing. The rack is easy for them to spot and I keep my junk tools there. I don't want them to use or find my SO stuff which I keep in my cabinets.

I do something pretty similar and for the same reason. But I also keep one "specialty" driver on the pegboard rack. It is a Blum posi drive I use for installing and adjusting Blum european cabinet hinges. I use it at the woodwork bench so I just keep it on the board above. Last weekend I see the wife strolling thorugh the house with it in hand, going to attack some window screens "uh, don't use that one honey", "why not, its just a screwdriver?" I found her kitchen 4 in 1 and told her to use it. I'm still a "jerk".:headscrat

LOL - same kind of stuff at my house. I come home from work, the freezer had iced over, and my wife is using my brand new Klein screwdriver as a chisel/icepick in the freezer.

I got her a stiff plastic spatula, a sponge and a cup of warm water to finish the job, and somehow I'm a jerk too. :lol_hitti

Here are some of mine. I have a bunch more Snap On that I keep in the original boxes with the molded inserts. They are in my truck right now though. I am trying to catch a truck to swap most of them out since they have messed up tips and deteriorating handles.

A similar situation happened to me once. I was tempted to take a couple pairs of my wife's sewing scissors out to the garage and just stage them to look like I was using them, in order to prove my point. I am happy to say that instead I sat on my hands and kept my mouth shut and so my marriage is still very much intact. :)

I recently figured out what I think is a pretty good solution for screwdriver organization, so I figured I'd revive an old thread. I too use the Craftsman screwdriver racks that gotmud mentioned previously...however, I found that for sometimes (especially with larger screwdrivers), it was a pain in the a$$ to get them out of the rack easily. So, I made some modifications to the racks - now, my screwdrivers sit securely in the rack and don't roll around when I open/close the drawer, and at the same time, they're easily removable from the rack. I've made a highly detailed and technical diagram (below) outlining the modifications - I hope everyone can follow, given the intricate and technical nature of these mods

Note - if you need the rack to be portable so that you can just grab all of your screwdrivers and go, then this probably isn't the best idea for you. I work primarily out of my toolbox and was just looking for a way to keep them organized and prevent them from rolling all over the place.

ScrewdriverRackMods.jpg

Step 1 - Cut off stupid handle
Step 2 - Cut off stupid horizontal piece at bottom of holder
Step 3 - Cut off stupid horiztonal tabs in the middle of the rack that are designed to keep screwdrivers in place when the rack is turned vertically (i.e. being carried or hung on a wall).
Step 4 - Flip rack over, open super secret trap door, pull out foam piece (forgot to include this on the diagram). Leaving the foam piece in is also an option, but i've found that the screwdrivers can be more easily inserted and removed if the foam piece is taken out.

The best part of it all is that removing the stupid handle makes the rack the perfect size to be placed lengthwise in a standard depth roll-away chest or a deeper (i.e. 16" rather than 12") top cabinet - putting three side-by-side fits perfectly into a 26" chest (see pics below).

Yeah, it's a little bit of work, but not much (I had all three cut down to size in about 10 mintes) - and at $5 each, you can't beat the price...not to mention the fact that you could get the screwdriver rack and a carpenter's pencil for about $0.60 by using the $5 coupon.

Hope this helps someone else get their screwdriver drawer a little more organized - I know it took me long enough to find a solution that I liked, but i'm pretty sure this is it

I have some of mine in screwdriver holes that were built into my tool cart. The rest are on magnetic strips over my bench (this is an old pic);

When you have your chainsaw screwdrivers mounted, that's organization.

Last time my wife abused one of my screwdrivers and couldn't understand why I got irritated, I asked her if she would mind if I used her sewing scissors to cut sand paper. She said she saw my point. But she still won't put my screwdrivers back in the tool box.

I like the method you show of cutting parts off the plastic organizer. I bought one from sears and have been buying c-man pro screwdrivers to load it up.

I think I'll get a few more for my cheapie screwdrivers and cut the holder up like you mentioned. I think these will be a good way to create a "top layer" in one of my deep drawers if I set them on top. Thanks!

Yup. On the other hand, I insist that my wife has good quality screwdrivers to use (I have another set in the house). I figure that with the abuse she'll inflict, good quality ones may be less likely for her to get hurt on. Worth the extra $$$ to me.

I liked the Craftsman rack that was butchered idea. I will likely never do something like that though; I have had them all stuffed in there like so many sardines in a can so many years I do not know I would operate if they were any other way!

That's what HF is for! Spend $30 on a nice little toolbox filled with tools "good enough" for her uses.

At my house my wife leaves everything to me. So far, no tool arguments.

I bought large and small test tube racks. Each test tube rack is good for two screwdriver racks. Works great.

Cool idea.

I now have three c-man screwdriver holders and while I haven't cut them up yet they let me put all of my screwdrivers as a top layer in one deep drawer and now I have an entire drawer cleared out and ready for more tools.
Thanks!

How easy is it to get those screwdrivers in and out of the holder? Can you do it one-handed or is it a two handed affair? Just wondering.....

So far I haven't been doing a lot of taking in and out. I think that when they are sitting in a drawer the screwdrivers can be lifted out reasonably well. The part that makes it hardest is the foam and the little lips that can be cut off. It's fine for me now but i will probably get rid of the foam and then trim down the lips so they are not so high but will still give some grip.

I used a 2 X 2 aluminum angle 6 ft long, with 1/2 holes every 3". I mounted it below the pegboard on the workbench. I does pliers , nut drivers and screwdrivers.

Not pretty but I can move all of them easily and I get better use out of a deep bottom box. Under them are all the drill bits, screw bits, allen wrenches etc.

Yeah, those are cheap HF screwdrivers, I just used the coupons to buy all the Caraftsman pro ones to make sure I have good ones for automotive use.

I took a piece of 20 ga. steel and bent it into an "L", drilled holes in it for 11 screwdrivers attached it to the side of my toolbox, presto no more looking for screwdrivers.
