Screwdriver Set Recommendation

I am looking to buy a new screwdriver set and have decided to be a little more open minded then sticking to one of my normal go to brands. During my search I found this BGS kit (picture below) which looked like exactly what I was wanting. Then I found during my research on GJ that it isn't made in Germany it is just a company based there and became very disapointed.

My questions are does anyone have first hand experiance with products of this brand maybe I shouldn't run from them just yet?

Let me talk about what I like about the set and why it looked perfect for me. I like having several sizes of both phillips and flat head screwdrivers, and having a full set of torx that match and fit neatly in a factory tray. The idea of being able to toss the tray in my toolbox and know anytime something got left in a car or didn't get put up after a project means a lot to me.

All and all it looks like a very complete set and is everything I want except I question the quality based on research saying it is made in Taiwan or China.

Can anyone recommend another set that is pretty much the exact same but of better quality and also in the same ballpark for price?

I obviously love Facom, but I can tell you haveing owned many current brand that Snap On scredrivers are some of the best I have ever used. Most of my smaller facom did not hold up well for me but my Snap On's always make me think how excellent they are when I used them. They have many different sets and the hard handled ones hold up well and are very easy to clean, but the soft handles are usually less expensive but I think in this case the SO are tough to go wrong with. Try a small set and you might really like them.

List is $195.90 for the set of the BGS drivers I posted, so they arn't "Cheap" screwdrivers. But I do question the quality, however from what I have read BGS tools are quality.... But I would rather hear that from someone on here then read it some random place.

The real question isn't about which brand to buy, there are several excellent brands out there and I am not opposed to any of them. But I want it to be a tray setup like this, and ideally with all of these pieces. I hope that makes sense?

I would look at the Craftsman Pro ones. with the Red/Black handles.
You can Get a really nice complete set for around $100, easily warrantied, and US made to boot. If Im not mistaken they come in plastic trays. And with coupon codes you can always knock a little more off the price. And right now the individual Torx drivers are ~$3-4 each on sale.

Maybe I should consider craftsman pro.... I need to check if they come with trays. I have 3 or 4 currently that have broken that I could warrant out at the same time and have matching spairs for in the future. That is one thing I hate about buying screwdrivers is whenever you need replacements it is almost impossible to get the same color & shape as what was offered whenever you bought the set new.

I have the 7-piece torx set and they are great. I got the set because they are longer than the regular Craftsman torx screwdrivers, and that set comes with a T-27 and T-40. I dont remember if they came with the tray or not.

At some point I want to upgrade all of mine to that style but for now I have way to many random acetate handle flat/phillips screwdrivers and they get the job done.

Not sure of your price range or the availability of these, but I have recently chosen to use the current Facom Range, after years of snapon I actually chose to try a lot of brands and I felt much more comfortable with the Facoms.

I bought the same set for the same reason. I have the 9pc snap on set and was a little mad when it would not reach the t20 in a Chrysler column shroud. I have since bought some others and they are my road screwdrivers. Can't beat them for the money. You could buy all 3 sets they carry in store for less than 100. That would be a pretty decent set

The Mac's are gorgeous but pricey. The Wiha's are a very complete set, but I wonder if it's just a lot of fluff that wouldn't get used. The Gearwrench set is nice and seems to have the bulk of what is really needed. I REALLY want a set with a tray so I can keep my box neat and organized. The Wiha's don't have a tray which isn't necessarily a deal breaker.

Those two Amazon sets look tempting, The Mac tools caught my eye earlier and still haven't ruled it out either... I feel like I opened pandora's box, the more I look the more options I see and now I'm having a harder time then ever picking :(

How are the gearwrench? They seem like they are priced close to several other big name brands....

I have no idea, but I think you and I are in the same boat. I have a set of standard Craftsman that I've had for years. They have been OK and I have a couple that need replacing, but I want a full new set. I like the ones that come with trays....If I go the Gearwrench route I plan on buying the Gearwrench pick set at the same time. They have the same handles and come with a tray also. Hell, I've about talked myself into them just typing this. If the Mac's were closer to $100 I'd probably go that route. It's tough to justify since my $30 Craftsman set has lasted almost a decade.

I have Snap-On , Facom, C'man, C'man Pro, Wera, Mac and Wiha and NONE are in a tray. And all 8 of my toolboxes are organized out the ***. Pristine.

To buy a set of screwdrivers based upon it coming with a tray or not is not rational tool buying in my eyes.

If you work in AF&PP (aviation) and require shadowing I MAY see the benefit (but there are 3rd party solutions for that) but not buying a good set of Wiha's because of no tray and going lower quality for the tray is crazy talk to me.

Just my opinion.

You are right....while I would like a tray, the absence of one would not make me pick one set over another. Like you, I've never had a tray before and my tools have always been organized. I've read a lot of good things about all three brands on this site. I'm not a professional so the Mac's don't make good financial sense. It really comes down to the Wiha and Gearwrench sets. The Wiha cost almost twice and much but comes with twice the drivers. With that said, I'm a bit concerned that the set contains a lot of fluff that wouldn't get used. Kinda like when Craftsman sells a 1,000 piece tool set and 250 pieces are allen keys.

jjjrmx5, I forgot to ask...since you have so many of the brands mentioned in this thread, which is your personal preference and why? (if Snap On is your top choice tell us about your number two choice....I can't afford their stuff).

I love comments like these.... Did anyone say they were going to buy lower quality screwdrivers to get a tray? NO...

So anyways back to real conversation.... The Wiha 3k doesn't seem to have very good reviews and looking at the build of them they look cheaper then other Wiha sets. Which would make sense since this is a huge set for the money. Can anyone confirm if these are low end junk with Wiha name to sell them?

i'd rather have a few excellent drivers than a grab bag of good drivers

best drivers i have are wiha c.k snapon felo.

each one has it's merits, but damn the wiha heavy duty's are nice, and the c.k's are great torx screw drivers

I have the Wiha Extra Heavy duty microfinish set and the Felo 550 set. They are both great. But, the Wiha's are my favorite because their phillips tips are indeed excellent.

I don't have any experience with their lower end offerings, so I don't know if the tips are as nice.

Personal preference?

Facoms.
Love them.
The sets I have are all mid 1990 era sets Made in France when Facom was still big in F1 racing.

I'll post a pic of them vs. C'man pros.

Night and day.

I normally now grab Snap-On ratcheting screwdrivers and use wiha bits (I have green ratcheting screwdrivers so I call them Kermit and Kermit Jr.-- LOL.)

Snap-On fixed shank screwdrivers are among the best, but you pay handsomely for them.

Hell, I keep HF orange and green screwdrivers in the bottom dwr of one box (insert Harry Potter humor of "Room of Requirement") and have had no problem with them.

I like pics. And I like Hazet (made by Witte and Felo) and Wiha. I used to use a ratcheting driver a lot, but now usually grab the correct fixed driver or my Milwaukee M12. I do still have bit and 1/4" drivers from 3"-14" when needed.

i have just recently started to buy better quality tools. today i got 2 sets of williams screwdrivers in. 6 phillips and 6 slotted. i believe they were around 35 a set. all i can say is i have really been missing out! i have used the kobalt, craftsman, and misc harbor freight stuff in the past and i can tell you for 70 these will be well worth the money!
